Honoring Every Age: Ministry to the Elderly and Individuals with Special Needs 

In many Tanzanian communities, elderly individuals and people with special needs face significant barriers to accessing even basic support and services, often relying entirely on family members who may themselves be stretched thin by poverty and competing responsibilities. Without dedicated outreach, these individuals can become isolated, overlooked by broader community and church life.

Maryknoll’s ministry addresses this gap directly, providing care and support services to elderly individuals and people with special needs who might otherwise be left without adequate assistance. At the same time, the ministry deliberately involves young people in this work, creating structured service opportunities that connect youth with the elderly and disabled members of their communities.

This ministry embodies the Catholic Social Teaching principle of the Life and Dignity of the Human Person across the entire span of life, affirming that worth is never diminished by age or ability. By deliberately involving young people in this care, the project also reflects Maryknoll’s charism of forming missionary disciples through direct encounter, teaching the next generation that solidarity is learned hands-on, not merely studied from a distance.

Gifts to this project support care for elderly and disabled individuals in Tanzania while creating service opportunities that form young people in faith, compassion, and lifelong habits of service to others.
