{"id":7339,"date":"2026-09-01T18:16:24","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T18:16:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=7339"},"modified":"2026-09-04T18:18:25","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T18:18:25","slug":"priests-in-mission-an-interview-with-bishop-joseph-perry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/priests-in-mission-an-interview-with-bishop-joseph-perry\/","title":{"rendered":"Priests in Mission: An Interview with Bishop Joseph Perry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bishop Joseph Perry has been following the Church\u2019s missionary work \u2014 and Maryknoll \u2014 for most of his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After conferring the sacrament of Holy Orders upon Father <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/06\/the-joy-of-a-dream-fulfilled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Victor Mutobera<\/a> at Maryknoll on June 6, the emeritus auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago discussed mission, his own vocation, immigration, racism and Pope Leo XIV, as well as the cause for canonization of <a href=\"https:\/\/tolton.archchicago.org\/about\/biography\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Venerable Father Augustus Tolton<\/a>, the first recognized African American priest from the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeing missionary is indigenous to the whole notion of priesthood,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/churchlifejournal.nd.edu\/articles\/a-bishop-speaks-out-about-racism-an-interview-with-auxiliary-bishop-joseph-n-perry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bishop Perry<\/a> says. \u201cThere has to be the whole notion of missionary in every priest\u2019s imagination. It\u2019s just that some do it more professionally than others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prelate has been reading <em>Maryknoll<\/em> magazine since grade school: \u201cI remember the earliest days of my own vocational search as a kid; I imagined myself as a missionary in a canoe going down the Amazon River.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He now enjoys a friendship with <a href=\"https:\/\/maryknollsociety.org\/vocations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryknoll priests and seminarians<\/a> in Chicago, where he grew up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While his vocation did not lead him to foreign mission, Bishop Perry says there are \u201cdifferent degrees\u201d of being a missioner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMore and more, I think we\u2019ve come to understand that even parish urban ministry is very missionary these days,\u201d he says. \u201cThere are some phenomenal places in the world, even the developing world, where the faith is even stronger than that in some of our cities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Africa, where many of Maryknoll\u2019s current seminarians come from, is one of those areas, he notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Church is strong there, he says, \u201cmaybe because they don\u2019t have as many distractions, and they\u2019re not wealthy, but they are wealthy in terms of spirituality and charity, and even people who have, in many places, had to suffer for the faith.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bishop Perry, who was ordained for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee in 1975 and appointed auxiliary bishop for Chicago in 1998, says he hopes and prays such vocations continue. He lamented, however, that the United States immigration system isn\u2019t more receptive of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe just hope that somehow our system here can be a little bit more generous and open, and, as such, that people can appreciate that the education that these guys receive from here is very, very valuable and enriching for them,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd, of course, we pick up something from them in light of their culture, their faith, their struggle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bishop Perry, a canon lawyer who has taught at several Catholic universities, is the postulator for the sainthood cause of Father Augustus Tolton, who was ordained in Rome in 1886. Father Tolton ministered at churches in Quincy, Illinois, and Chicago. In 2019, Pope Francis declared Father Tolton venerable, the second step in the canonization process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo, we\u2019re now in that quiet phase of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franciscanmedia.org\/news-commentary\/vatican-officials-in-us-to-study-alleged-miracles-in-father-toltons-cause\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">looking for a miracle<\/a> that would get him beatified,\u201d Bishop Perry says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Father Tolton was born into slavery in Missouri and, as a child, was taken to Illinois, a free state, by his mother, who fled with her children across the Mississippi River to freedom during the Civil War. There, he was educated in Catholic schools, including by Franciscans who saw he had a possible religious vocation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn those days, they didn\u2019t accept Black students in seminaries and convents,\u201d in the United States, the bishop says, so the Franciscans arranged for him to study in Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe was in Rome for six years, and they were going to send him to Africa to be a missionary there,\u201d Bishop Perry says. \u201cThey perceived that he couldn\u2019t be a success here in this country, because no one had ever seen a Roman collar around the neck of a Black man before.\u201d However, the night before Father Tolton was to be ordained, the cardinal in charge of his assignment decided that the new priest should be a missionary in his own country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Father Tolton suffered greatly from discrimination during his ministry in Quincy. People resisted the idea of a Black clergyman serving both white and Black Catholics, Bishop Perry says. Father Tolton was forced to leave Quincy and went to serve in Chicago, working with Black Catholics there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bishop says that he first learned of Father Tolton in seminary and identifies with him as an African American priest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI identify him with a lot,\u201d he says. \u201cHe was thrust into a situation where he was really alone.
