{"id":7260,"date":"2026-09-03T16:51:01","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T16:51:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=7260"},"modified":"2026-09-04T16:53:24","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T16:53:24","slug":"pope-leo-begins-teaching-series-on-gaudium-et-spes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/pope-leo-begins-teaching-series-on-gaudium-et-spes\/","title":{"rendered":"Pope Leo Begins Teaching Series on \u2018Gaudium et Spes\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By Josephine Peterson, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osvnews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catholic News Service<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VATICAN CITY \u2014 The faithful are called to leave behind \u201call passivity and indifference\u201d toward current events and the lives of others, especially amid the \u201crapid and profound changes we are experiencing today,\u201d Pope Leo XIV said at his weekly general audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe cannot remain as unengaged spectators; rather, we must listen with our hearts, allow ourselves to be challenged, and become involved,\u201d the pope said Sept. 2 in St. Peter\u2019s Square.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith Christ and sustained by the power of His Spirit, believers are called to take on the burdens of their brothers and sisters, especially those who are crushed by injustice, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/11\/report-global-poverty-religious-restrictions-discrimination-against-women-remain-high\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discrimination<\/a> and violence,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pope Leo began a new series of reflections on the Second Vatican Council\u2019s pastoral constitution <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/hist_councils\/ii_vatican_council\/documents\/vat-ii_const_19651207_gaudium-et-spes_en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Gaudium et Spes<\/em><\/a>, which examines the relationship between the Church and the modern world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recalling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/12\/vatican-ii-at-60-the-father-of-vatican-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St. John XXIII<\/a>\u2018s warning against the \u201cprophets of doom,\u201d who regarded their own times as worse than the past, Pope Leo said Christians are instead called to share in the life of humanity as Christ did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such closeness to humanity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/07\/pope-leo-warns-against-thinking-of-god-in-terms-of-power-domination-and-triumph\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the pope<\/a> said, also opens the way to a deeper understanding of events and of Revelation itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is not, in fact, merely a moral imperative,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prioritize human dignity, says the Holy Father<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addressing English-speaking pilgrims, Pope Leo said it is the Church\u2019s pastoral responsibility to engage with the contemporary world, share in its joys and sorrows and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/10\/love-for-the-poor-is-hallmark-of-faith-pope-leo-says-in-first-exhortation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advocate for the poor<\/a> and marginalized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Church, he said, also must remain \u201cattentive to the signs of the times,\u201d confronting \u201cpressing issues such as the technological progress that benefits only some and the persistence of widespread poverty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His remarks came months after the publication of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/20260515-magnifica-humanitas.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his first encyclical<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/07\/magnifica-humanitas-anthropology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Magnifica Humanitas<\/em><\/a>, which detailed his account of the global implications of artificial intelligence and warned against allowing technological development to proceed without prioritizing human dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn our own day, marked by profound change and much injustice, each of us, then, is called to play our part in welcoming and listening to the deepest questions and longings of the human heart, making present to all the merciful love of Christ our Savior,\u201d the pope told English speakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a period of profound change that is producing \u201cworrying imbalances,\u201d Pope Leo said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/08\/catholic-culture-of-love-urgently-needed-in-todays-world-pope-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Church is called to serve the human person<\/a> by listening to \u201cthe deepest questions of their heart and the longings that dwell within them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Church must point people toward Christ, he said, as \u201cthe key, the focal point and the goal of all human history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Featured image: Pope Leo XIV greets a child from the popemobile while riding around St. Peter\u2019s Square at the Vatican before his weekly general audience Sept. 2, 2026.
