{"id":7247,"date":"2026-08-31T19:20:32","date_gmt":"2026-08-31T19:20:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=7247"},"modified":"2026-09-02T19:22:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-02T19:22:10","slug":"miami-archbishop-urges-against-deportations-to-haiti-after-massacre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/miami-archbishop-urges-against-deportations-to-haiti-after-massacre\/","title":{"rendered":"Miami Archbishop Urges Against Deportations to Haiti After Massacre"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Gina Christian, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osvnews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OSV News<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(OSV News) \u2014 A deadly gang attack near Haiti\u2019s capital that saw dozens killed and kidnapped should cause the U.S. to \u201crethink\u201d its ending of deportation protections for hundreds of thousands of Haitians, Archbishop Thomas G. Wenski of Miami told OSV News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Aug. 23 massacre, which took place in <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2026\/08\/1168203\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the village of Kenscoff<\/a> \u2014 located outside the capital of Port-au-Prince \u2014 left more than 47 dead, with at least 50 kidnapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year, Irish lay missionary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/09\/irish-missionary-freed-after-monthlong-kidnapping-in-haiti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gena Heraty<\/a> was kidnapped from the Kenscoff-based orphanage she oversees and held hostage for a month before being released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">United Nations Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres condemned the latest violence, with his spokesperson noting in an Aug. 25 statement that 22 victims \u201cwere reportedly executed in a church compound where they had found shelter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis shows that the country is not safe, that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/07\/miami-archbishop-calls-for-compassionate-protections-for-haitians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Haiti is still a house on fire<\/a>,\u201d Archbishop Wenski said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that \u201cthis should cause our administration to rethink its decision to send back into Haiti over 300,000 Haitians\u201d currently in the U.S. under now-revoked Temporary Protected Status, or TPS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deportation protection, created by Congress as part of the Immigration Act of 1990, provides deportation protections for those from Homeland Security-designated countries experiencing ongoing crises, such as war and environmental disasters. More than 330,000 Haitians in the U.S. had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/08\/270-faith-leaders-extend-temporary-protected-status-for-salvadorans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TPS protection<\/a> as of 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Aug. 5, U.S. District Court Judge Ana C. Reyes affirmed the Supreme Court\u2019s June ruling allowing the Trump administration to terminate the TPS designation for Haiti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/10\/florida-archbishop-wenski-deplores-massacre-in-haiti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Archbishop Wenski<\/a> pointed to a recent bill before the Senate that, if passed, would extend TPS for Haiti through early 2029.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The legislation \u201cwould pass very easily\u201d if President Donald Trump \u201cwould voice his support,\u201d said the archbishop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Archbishop Wenski says deportation will compound tragedy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He noted that the latest attack took place \u201cin one of the nicer neighborhoods of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/11\/between-resilience-and-resignation-the-cry-of-the-haitian-people-lingers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Haiti<\/a>,\u201d indicating that \u201cthe gangs are obviously taking control of that and terrorizing the population.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, Archbishop Wenski said, the U.S. \u2014 which urges its own citizens not to travel to Haiti due to the risk of crime, kidnapping, terrorism and limited health care \u2014 is deporting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2022\/06\/father-romane-st-vil-a-family-builds-a-home-together\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Haitians<\/a> to a country in which they will \u201cbe exposed to the violence of the gangs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHaiti is a tragedy, and what we\u2019re doing is compounding it by trying to send these people back,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The very process of deportation itself creates cascading suffering, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With more than 300,000 Haitians in the U.S. now lacking deportation protections, \u201ceven if you send a couple of planes a week, it\u2019ll take several years before you are successful in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/05\/mass-deportations-reduce-overall-employment-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deporting all those people<\/a>,\u201d said the archbishop. \u201cAnd what happens in the meantime is that they\u2019ve lost their work permits, and they\u2019ve lost their driver\u2019s licenses for the most part. So if they can\u2019t work, they can\u2019t pay their rent, they can\u2019t buy food.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Relatives in Haiti who depend upon remittances \u2014 earnings sent by migrant workers to support their families back home \u2014 will also be deprived of critical funds needed to educate children in the Caribbean nation, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThose children will not be able to go to school, which even further complicates the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/03\/haitis-violence-leading-to-civil-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">situation on the ground in Haiti<\/a>,\u201d said Archbishop Wenski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">90% of capital is controlled by gangs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the Archdiocese of Miami had to \u201clet go some 45 people that were on TPS, because we can\u2019t legally hire them when their work permit is removed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe idea is to make it miserable for them so that they go back to Haiti,\u201d said Archbishop Wenski. \u201cBut there\u2019s really nothing there right now to go back to, except <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/03\/sudden-program-cancellation-leaves-half-a-million-legal-migrants-stranded\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chaos and more pain<\/a> and more suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Archbishop Wenski said that after the Aug. 23 attack he had spoken with Archbishop Max Leroy M\u00e9sidor of Port-au-Prince, president of the Haitian Bishops\u2019 Conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city of Port-au-Prince \u2014 about 90% of which is controlled by some 26 gangs, according to the U.N. \u2014 is \u201cthe Wild West,\u201d said Archbishop Wenski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said Archbishop M\u00e9sidor confirmed \u201cthe majority of the gangs\u201d are in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewtnnews.com\/world\/americas\/archdiocese-of-port-au-prince-denounces-the-collapse-of-humanity-in-haitian-society\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince<\/a> \u2014 but \u201cthe Church has to continue its mission in good times and bad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd right now, these are very bad times for Haiti,\u201d said Archbishop Wenski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Featured image: Women mourn near the bodies of people in Kenscoff, Haiti, on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince, killed during an overnight raid by an armed gang.
