{"id":7239,"date":"2026-08-27T19:15:42","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T19:15:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=7239"},"modified":"2026-09-02T19:17:43","modified_gmt":"2026-09-02T19:17:43","slug":"hundreds-dead-and-missing-in-nepals-catastrophic-mudslides","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/hundreds-dead-and-missing-in-nepals-catastrophic-mudslides\/","title":{"rendered":"Hundreds Dead and Missing in Nepal\u2019s Catastrophic Mudslides"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(OSV News) \u2014 Pope Leo XIV expressed his sadness by the devastation wrought by a glacial collapse in the Nepal-China border, causing a deadly wave of floods and mudslides that killed 168 people with hundreds more feared dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a telegram sent on the pope\u2019s behalf Aug. 27, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican secretary of state, expressed <a href=\"https:\/\/press.vatican.va\/content\/salastampa\/en\/bollettino\/pubblico\/2026\/08\/27\/260827d.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the pontiff\u2019s condolences<\/a> upon learning \u201cof the loss of life and devastation caused by the flash floods in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2021\/03\/lifelines-for-the-least-of-these-in-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nepal<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCommending the souls of the deceased to the clemency of the Almighty, His Holiness sends heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved, together with the assurance of his spiritual closeness to those affected by this tragedy,\u201d Cardinal Parolin wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLikewise offering prayers for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2018\/03\/then-the-rains-flooding-landslides-in-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the emergency<\/a> personnel engaged in the ongoing rescue efforts, he invokes upon all divine assistance and protection,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to The Associated Press, the U.S. Geological Survey initially reported an earthquake 41 miles north of Kathmandu Aug. 26. However, further analysis revealed that the seismic event was caused by a 5.2 magnitude glacial collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disaster was a grim confirmation of warnings given earlier this year regarding the effects of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/07\/leo-xiv-prays-for-conversion-of-those-resisting-climate-action-at-new-mass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">climate change<\/a> on nearby glaciers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March, researchers from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) released a report revealing that glaciers across the Himalayas were melting at an accelerating rate and warned that concrete action was needed to avoid further disasters to communities in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis isn\u2019t a distant problem; it\u2019s a crisis unfolding in real-time, with new disasters every summer and monsoon,\u201d said Pema Gyamtsho, the director general of ICIMOD. \u201cThe fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icimod.org\/press-releases\/hindu-kush-himalaya-glaciers-losing-ice-at-double-the-rate-since-2000-new-icimod-report-confirm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ice loss rates<\/a> have doubled this century should shock us all into action.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nepal\u2019s \u201cworst disaster\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with the Vatican\u2019s missionary news agency, Fides, published Aug. 27, Father Silas Krishna Bogati, the apostolic administrator of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2016\/03\/mercy-former-hindu-kingdom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nepal<\/a>, called the catastrophic event as \u201cthe worst disaster in the country\u2019s history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was terrible. A flood coming from the mountains, and directed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OTgZMl2aG3M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">violently towards the valley<\/a>, overwhelmed everything: people, homes, bridges, structures. Villages, markets, and roads were swept away. It is a serious wound for the nation,\u201d Father Bogati told Fides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Father Bogati told Fides he was \u201cshocked\u201d and offered prayers for the dead, the missing, and \u201cthose suffering because of this catastrophe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have about 25 Catholic families in the disaster area; they appear to be safe, but we are very worried about them,\u201d he said. \u201cWe entrust them to God, we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/06\/pope-leo-xiv-calls-for-prayers-solidarity-after-deadly-venezuela-quakes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pray for their safety<\/a>, and we will do everything we can to help them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The apostolic administrator of Nepal also said that a priest of the vicariate, Father James Britto, was stranded after \u201che had gone to celebrate Mass on the other side of the river and was stranded.\u201d According to Father Bogati, the bridge the priest had crossed was swept away by the floods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Foreign tourists are among the missing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of Aug. 27, more than 1,300 people are missing in Nepal and Tibet, more than a hundred of whom were visiting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Mount-Kailash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mount Kailash<\/a>, a pilgrimage site sacred to several Eastern religions, including Hinduism and Buddhism, AP reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are Nepalese, but also foreigners and tourists who were in these areas on an excursion: it is a pilgrimage route to Mansarovar, a sacred Hindu site that is also a trail for hikers and trekkers,\u201d Father Bogati explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The priest told Fides this was \u201cthe second time a disaster of this kind has occurred in that area, but this time it is of enormous proportions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also said the local Church\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caritas.org\/where-we-work-country\/nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caritas<\/a> office was launching an appeal \u201cto <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2021\/09\/father-joseph-thaler-call-within-the-call\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">partners<\/a> around the world\u201d&nbsp;for assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will do our part,\u201d Father Bogati said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/07\/against-the-odds-crs-has-delivered-aid-to-1-7-million-in-gaza-since-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catholic Relief Services (CRS)<\/a>, the U.S. Catholic Church\u2019s international aid agency, said it was closely monitoring the situation in Nepal and announced it was \u201ccoordinating with Caritas Nepal and local partners to assess urgent needs and determine how best to support affected communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Featured image: Police officers carry an elderly survivor to a safer place at Trishuli in Nepal\u2019s Nuwakot district Aug. 27, 2026, following devastating floods.
