rel=\"noopener\">OSV News<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(OSV News) \u2014 Catholic Relief Services is welcoming federal support that will help \u201csignificantly expand\u201d humanitarian aid to Cuba, as the Caribbean nation battles multiple crises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CRS, the humanitarian and development agency of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/06\/usccb-president-bishops-stand-with-immigrants-in-this-challenging-hour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops<\/a>, announced July 21 that it had received a $60 million award from the U.S. Department of State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agency said the funding will enable it to partner with Caritas Cuba \u2014 which, like CRS, is part of Caritas Internationalis, the Catholic Church\u2019s global humanitarian network \u2014 to provide \u201cemergency food and hygiene supplies to nearly 200,000 households, or more than half a million people,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/06\/religious-communities-in-cuba-struggle-to-sustain-ministries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">across Cuba<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The award will also allow the two agencies to distribute \u201cessential household items \u2014 including mattresses and blankets \u2014 to another 7,000 people who need them,\u201d said CRS in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crs.org\/news\/crs-receives-60-million-humanitarian-response-cuba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a separate media note released the same day, the State Department said two of its officials had joined CRS staff in Miami July 21 \u201cto send off the first flight of humanitarian relief\u201d under Secretary of State Marco Rubio\u2019s $100 million commitment in aid to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2021\/07\/cuba-will-not-be-the-same-after-july-11-protests-catholic-media-specialist-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cuban people<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The State Department said the flight contained \u201cpre-packaged food and hygiene kits for up to 700 Cuban families,\u201d with the items set to be delivered by CRS \u201cin partnership with the Catholic Church and Caritas Cuba on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe direct delivery of humanitarian commodities by local parish representatives in the island will ensure critical U.S. assistance reaches everyday Cubans in need, without any opportunity for regime diversion or theft,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/r\/1ESW2396PN\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the State Department<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aid to address hunger and basic needs\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CRS said the new funding from the State Department \u201cbuilds on\u201d an \u201congoing emergency response\u201d launched by its team and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caritas.org\/where-we-work-country\/cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caritas Cuba<\/a> partners in the wake of 2025\u2019s Hurricane Melissa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That storm\u2019s \u201cimpact on infrastructure and essential services was widespread,\u201d according to a July 1 situation update from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IFRC said that storm recovery \u201chas been particularly challenging due to pre-existing structural vulnerabilities and the cumulative effects of prior disasters,\u201d such as the 2024 Hurricanes Oscar and Rafael, \u201cfrom which many communities had not yet fully recovered.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCuba has faced four consecutive years of significant shocks without a sustained recovery window, contributing to a marked <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cuba-water-shortages-oil-fuel-us-blockade-4cffcda6aa913ef5e4540b91b1568e3b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deterioration in socioeconomic conditions<\/a>,\u201d said the IFRC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Disease, along with infant and maternal mortality, has risen on the island, while food, water, healthcare, electricity and fuel resources have plunged. A 2026 U.S. blockade on oil imports to Cuba has intensified the crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CRS said in its July 21 press release that \u201cfamilies across the island continue to struggle with worsening food insecurity and hunger, prolonged fuel shortages and limited access to basic services.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crs.org\/about-us\/crs-leadership\/sean-callahan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sean Callahan<\/a>, the agency\u2019s president and CEO, said families in Cuba face \u201cgrowing hardship as they struggle to put food on the table, access clean water and meet other basic needs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new funding, said Callahan, will allow CRS and Caritas Cuba \u201cto significantly expand humanitarian assistance through the Catholic Church\u2019s trusted network, reaching vulnerable families with the help they urgently need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Featured image: Lourdes Mart\u00ednez, 78, smiles after receiving beans at a subsidized state store in Havana March 6, 2026, donated by Mexico.
