{"id":7112,"date":"2026-07-21T00:39:32","date_gmt":"2026-07-21T00:39:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=7112"},"modified":"2026-08-05T00:46:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T00:46:11","slug":"pope-leo-warns-against-thinking-of-god-in-terms-of-power-domination-and-triumph","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/pope-leo-warns-against-thinking-of-god-in-terms-of-power-domination-and-triumph\/","title":{"rendered":"Pope Leo Warns Against Thinking of God in Terms of Power, Domination and Triumph"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By Victoria Cardiel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewtnnews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EWTN<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pope Leo XIV warned Sunday against imagining God as \u201ca powerful figure who imposes himself by force, who takes over and dominates, or who arrives triumphantly\u201d and urged Christians to embrace a Gospel-centered approach marked by humility and trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/en\/angelus\/2026\/documents\/20260719-angelus.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Angelus prayer<\/a> in Liberty Square at Castel Gandolfo, where he is spending several weeks of rest through Monday, July 27, the pope reflected on the day\u2019s Gospel reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the parable of the sower, Jesus addresses the crowds through the images of the good wheat and the weeds, the mustard seed, and the yeast in the dough, the pope noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese three short parables recall the coming of the kingdom of God in history, its action in human lives, and the way it grows, expands, and transforms the world from within,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/06\/pope-leo-xiv-calls-for-prayers-solidarity-after-deadly-venezuela-quakes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pope Leo<\/a> said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through these images, he continued, Jesus warns against thinking of God principally in terms of power, domination, and triumph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInstead, God favors smallness, a sign of his discreet love, by which he leaves us free to accept or reject him,\u201d the pope said. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/06\/united-by-gods-love-an-ordination-preview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">His love<\/a> makes its presence felt even among the weeds, acts in a hidden and invisible way like the smallest of all seeds, and leavens the dough without making a sound.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">God favors smallness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pope Leo said believers sometimes expect God to act in dramatic and immediately visible ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe sometimes expect God to do something spectacular; we want him to intervene from on high, immediately uprooting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/01\/overcoming-evil-with-good-in-minneapolis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the weeds of evil<\/a>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe imagine a strong and powerful God, and, unfortunately, we also model our way of being Christians and way of being the Church on this image.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2018\/07\/kingdom-god-southern-sudan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The kingdom of God<\/a>, however, continues to grow quietly even amid evil, the pope said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHowever, the kingdom of God spreads even amidst the weeds, requiring us to train our vision so we can discern the good that sprouts despite the darkness of evil, and avoiding rash judgments,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The image of the smallest seed, Pope Leo explained, teaches Christians <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2021\/09\/cardinal-bo-patience-only-way-to-live-in-peace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to be patient<\/a> as God works through ordinary events and gradual processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt comes like the smallest of seeds and thus calls for patience in accompanying these processes, so that we can recognize it in the little things of daily life and in the simplicity of ordinary existence,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The kingdom also \u201cgrows invisibly like yeast in flour,\u201d the pope continued, freeing believers from discouragement and inviting them to maintain faith even when God appears absent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/06\/god-everywhere-always\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he is always with us<\/a>, and his love is always ready to help us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pope Leo then urged Catholics to apply this divine way of acting to both their personal lives and the life of the Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGod\u2019s way of acting must also become the way in which we live, both as individuals and as the Church, amidst the reality that surrounds us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are called to adopt a Gospel-centered approach, without hastily opposing others through arrogant judgments, without imposing ourselves through power and force, and without losing trust in God\u2019s work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Called to serve in humility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pope cited a reflection given by then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the future <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2023\/01\/eight-years-as-pope-capped-pope-benedicts-long-ministry-as-teacher-of-faith\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pope Benedict XVI<\/a>, during the Jubilee of Catechists and Religion Teachers in the Holy Year 2000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs the then-Cardinal Ratzinger said, it is a matter of submitting ourselves to the logic of the seed \u2014 which is not that of success and greatness but that of making ourselves small and serving others,\u201d Pope Leo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By embracing this approach, he concluded, Christians can become instruments through which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/05\/gods-diplomat-pope-leo-xiv-speaks-gospel-to-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Gospel<\/a> quietly transforms the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn this way, we will become like small seeds of the Gospel that sprout and leavens of love that transform the dough of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Featured image: Pope Leo XIV greets the faithful after the Angelus prayer in Piazza della Libert\u00e0 in Castel Gandolfo, near Rome, Italy, on July 19, 2026.
