Kroeger, M.M.&nbsp;<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thirteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time<br>June 28, 2026<br><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/062826.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16a | Romans 6:3-4, 8-11 | Matthew 10:37-42<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being Jesus\u2019 disciple demands asking many deep, disturbing questions: Why do I do certain things? Who and what guide my choices? Family? Friends? Desire of possessions?&nbsp; Status in the community? Personal pleasure? Service of others? Love of God?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, Jesus\u2019 words in today\u2019s Gospel passage from St. Matthew can be very disturbing; they confront us and question the quality of our discipleship, our genuine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2022\/07\/following-christ-means-seeing-helping-the-suffering-pope-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">following of Jesus<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone has noted that the purpose of preaching the Gospel is to \u201ccomfort the afflicted\u201d (the poor and suffering) and also to \u201cafflict the comfortable\u201d (those who have enough of life\u2019s necessities and yet do not show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/10\/love-for-the-poor-is-hallmark-of-faith-pope-leo-says-in-first-exhortation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">compassion to the needy<\/a>). A close reading of today\u2019s Gospel may indeed disturb or \u201cafflict\u201d us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We hear Jesus\u2019 blunt and direct words: \u201cWhoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me \u2026 whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.\u201d \u201cWhoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones \u2026 will surely not lose his reward.\u201d How do we respond to Jesus\u2019 challenges?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Papal Wisdom:&nbsp; <\/strong>Saint Pope Paul VI, in his powerful reflection on evangelization in the modern world (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/paul-vi\/en\/apost_exhortations\/documents\/hf_p-vi_exh_19751208_evangelii-nuntiandi.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Evangelii Nuntiandi<\/a><\/em>), makes an insightful point: the Gospels are meant to challenge our values, choices, and relationships. Listen to this pope-saint \u2014 and be disturbed!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Church\u2019s task in preaching the Gospel means, according to Paul VI, \u201caffecting and, as it were,&nbsp;<em>upsetting<\/em>, through the&nbsp;<em>power of the Gospel<\/em>, humanity\u2019s criteria of judgment, determining values, points of interest, lines of thought, sources of inspiration and models of life, which are in contrast with the Word of God and the plan of salvation\u201d (EN 19).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The demands of discipleship pose real questions:&nbsp; Do I place God&nbsp;<em>first<\/em> in my life \u2014 even above family and friends?&nbsp; Do I willingly carry my <em>daily crosses<\/em>? Am I <em>over-attached<\/em> to material possessions? Being an admirer of Jesus is easy; being a genuine disciple requires commitment, dedication, and hard decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Contemporary Witnessing: <\/strong>One valid, contemporary description of discipleship is to understand it as a \u201ccounter-cultural witness.\u201d This means following one\u2019s Christian convictions \u2014 even against the tide of prevailing cultural patterns and social values which are contrary to the Gospel. Some brief examples help to illustrate this \u201ccounter-cultural\u201d point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A young man who is a new doctor or lawyer leaves his profession and <a href=\"https:\/\/maryknollsociety.org\/vocations\/fathers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enters the seminary<\/a> to study for the priesthood. A pregnant, unmarried lady refuses the convenient path of abortion, knowing it will radically change her life; she has to abandon her dreams of a professional career. A brave man speaks out against corruption in government or business, even if it may cost him his job or bring threats to his life. Family members lovingly care for a child <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/05\/people-with-disabilities-have-a-sense-of-the-global-church-rejoice-with-caregivers-during-rome-jubilee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with a disability<\/a> at great sacrifice to themselves. A woman volunteers to leave a comfortable private school to work with children at a school in a poor area. A family commits to a shared meal with some time for common prayer several times a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both the Church and society need the witness of people who are countercultural. Many world leaders followed the humble nun, Saint Mother Teresa, to her burial in 1997, but her countercultural witness, I believe, must have made them (and us) decidedly uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Significant Challenges: <\/strong>Personally, in my high-school years, I read passionately two books by Diedrich Bonhoeffer, who died in 1945 at the age of 39 in the Flossenb\u00fcrg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/05\/survivor-speaks-for-holocaust-remembrance-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concentration camp<\/a> in Germany. <em>The Cost of Discipleship <\/em>(1937) and&nbsp;<em>Letters and Papers from Prison <\/em>(1951) are classics of what becoming Jesus\u2019 disciple demands. They remain relevant for our day and its challenges, particularly in U.S. society!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask yourself, challenge yourself: What sacrifices or changes in my life are needed so I can be a more genuine and compassionate disciple of Jesus? How can I more authentically die with Christ in order to live more abundantly with him?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In conclusion, I ask you: Have my many questions disturbed you? If you reply \u201cYes,\u201d I will answer: \u201cGood.\u201d Maybe we are both now closer to understanding the true costs of discipleship as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/01\/in-jesus-footsteps-a-maryknoll-reflection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">authentic following of Jesus<\/a>. Indeed, discipleship costs; often, the costs are high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Maryknoll Father James H.
