{"id":7003,"date":"2026-06-24T13:11:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T13:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=7003"},"modified":"2026-08-04T21:21:58","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T21:21:58","slug":"parish-priest-killed-in-sudans-ongoing-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/parish-priest-killed-in-sudans-ongoing-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"Parish Priest Killed in Sudan\u2019s Ongoing Violence"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By Fredrick Nzwili, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osvnews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OSV News<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(OSV News) \u2014 Catholic leaders in Sudan are renewing calls to end violence against innocent civilians after the killing of Father Youhanna Al-Amin, a priest serving in the Diocese of El-Obeid, who chose to remain with his people amid worsening security situation in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fides.org\/en\/news\/77845-AFRICA_SUDAN_Bishop_Kussala_The_loss_of_Father_Youhanna_Al_Amin_is_a_painful_wound_for_the_entire_Church\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Father Al-Amin<\/a> was shot and killed June 19 at 10 a.m. local time in Kauda, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/05\/saying-yes-a-maryknoll-reflection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nuba Mountains<\/a> in Kordofan state, just as he was preparing to evacuate because of worsening insecurity. Two security guards were shot alongside him; one was killed, and one survived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The priest had been recently assigned to Holy Cross Parish in Kauda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe faithful of the Holy Cross Parish, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/12\/religious-leaders-call-for-ceasefire-after-attack-in-sudan-kills-mainly-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catholic Community<\/a> and all the people of goodwill are deeply saddened by this tragic loss,\u201d said Bishop Yunan Tombe Trille Kuku Andali of El-Obeid in a statement June 19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bishop said the priest was \u201cwell known for his dedicated pastoral service, commitment to the service and care for those entrusted to him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Explaining the circumstances surrounding the priest\u2019s death, Bishop Trille Kuku said soldiers from one of the military factions in the region had come to the church compound on the evening of June 18 and demanded access to the medical store. The storekeeper \u201chad no choice,\u201d said the bishop, and cooperated with the military staff, allowing them to take as much as they could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The priest had reportedly considered evacuating from the region the next day over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/03\/world-watch-ethnic-cleansing-in-sudan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deteriorating security<\/a>, but the soldiers had returned to the church compound that morning before he could leave and shot him dead in his room. One of his security guards, the bishop reported, was also killed, and one survived and was taken to the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Priest chose to stay despite ongoing violence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Father Peter Suleiman Bolis, episcopal vicar of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/08\/sudanese-humanitarian-situation-cant-wait-says-bishop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El-Obeid<\/a>, said the priest was killed because he confronted the looters and resisted surrendering keys the previous day. The armed men had forced their way into the parish compound, destroying and looting the parish and also broke into the storages of the Bishop Gassis Relief and Rescue Foundation, taking away medicines and food items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe condemn seriously such innocent killing of a Catholic priest,\u201d said Father Bolis in a statement on June 20. \u201cI urge the government in leadership to react and stop the shedding of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/projects\/sudan-conflict\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">innocents\u2019 blood<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kauda is the main center of the areas of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/04\/a-faith-rooted-in-example-a-maryknoll-reflection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nuba Mountains<\/a> controlled by the Sudan People\u2019s Liberation Movement-North, or SPLM-N.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn recent months, the deteriorating security situation, together with armed and tribal conflicts, had forced the evacuation of some religious personnel from the region,\u201d pontifical foundation Aid to the Church in Need said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The killed priest however, \u201cchose to remain with the community he served, becoming one of the few priests still carrying out his ministry in this region very much affected by violence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThose who knew him say that he did not abandon his people when circumstances became increasingly difficult. His role extended beyond spiritual care,\u201d ACN emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Father Al-Amin is the second Catholic priest to die in the diocese. Around the same time in 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchinneed.org\/father-jomo-is-first-priest-believed-to-be-killed-during-sudan-conflict\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Father Luka Jomo<\/a>, the Catholic parish priest of El-Fasher in North Darfur in the country\u2019s western region, died after being struck by a stray bullet. The Rapid Support Force militia, known as RSF, was deliberately shelling the city to dislodge their adversaries, the Sudan Armed Forces. Before his death on June 13, Father Jomo was also preparing to evacuate from the besieged city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Local tensions and armed groups fuel violence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Italian Bishop Christian Carlassare of Bentiu in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/03\/south-sudans-people-suffer-a-heavy-burden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Sudan<\/a> said the killing of the priest appeared unrelated to the broader Sudanese war since the SPLM-N, a neutral faction, controlled much of the Nuba Mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHowever, recent violence in the area seems to have been fueled by local ethnic and political tensions,\u201d Bishop Carlassare told OSV News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He explained that a collection of communities with diverse languages, cultures and identities lived in the Nuba Mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile these groups have often united in the face of common external threats, they can also experience divisions over local issues and interests,\u201d he said, adding that SPLM-North controlled the territory together with other smaller armed groups, but in recent months, clashes between the groups have increasingly affected the local population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn a context marked by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/09\/poverty-and-violence-affect-women-and-girls-says-vatican-to-un\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poverty<\/a>, food insecurity, and limited economic opportunities, criminal activity has also increased,\u201d said the bishop. \u201cSome armed groups that were originally perceived as protectors of local communities have, in certain cases, become a source of insecurity and suffering for the very people they claim to defend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SPLM-North said it had \u201cno interest\u201d in killing the priest, as the Catholic Church had long provided vital services to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/07\/war-is-tearing-sudan-apart-bishops-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">people of the region<\/a>, particularly in the field of education and health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSPLM-N condemns the repeated violations committed by the rebel group of Habil Katen Aria since 12 March 2026,\u201d the movement said of the tribal militia. \u201cThese violations included targeting and killing innocent civilians, kidnappings, burning villages, looting humanitarian organizations\u2019 warehouses, as well as stealing livestock, markets, and citizens\u2019 property.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">U.N. warns of escalating violence in El-Obeid<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humanitarian agencies warn that the Sudanese conflict is intensifying in Kordofan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/press-releases\/2026\/06\/un-report-documents-widespread-and-brutal-use-sexual-violence-sudan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The United Nations<\/a> said on June 18, following reports of a significant buildup of RSF militia and allied troops around the city, accompanied by intensified drone strikes and artillery shelling, that \u201cdozens of drone strikes have hit El-Obeid over the past two weeks, particularly targeting fuel stations and trucks, killing civilians and cutting off access to basic services.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Volker T\u00fcrk, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights warned that \u201cThe imminent offensive against El-Obeid risks commission of serious international crimes and deepens the catastrophic impact on an already beleaguered civilian population.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe States with influence have the duty to exercise it now to stop this madness in its tracks,\u201d he urged, lamenting that El-Obeid\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/International\/inside-sudans-el-fasher-city-siege-amid-civil\/story?id=114176497\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">population has endured siege-like conditions<\/a> for more than 18 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Featured image: Father Youhanna Al-Amin is seen celebrating Mass in Sudan in an undated photograph.
