{"id":6992,"date":"2026-06-22T02:18:37","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T02:18:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=6992"},"modified":"2026-06-24T02:20:35","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T02:20:35","slug":"feed-people-not-conflicts-says-pope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/feed-people-not-conflicts-says-pope\/","title":{"rendered":"Feed People, Not Conflicts, Says Pope"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By Junno Arocho Esteves, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osvnews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OSV News<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">World hunger has only worsened as conflicts in the world take priority over human lives and weaponry is allowed more distribution than basic humanitarian needs, Pope Leo XIV said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addressing members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Nations\u2019 World Food Program<\/a>, or WFP, June 22, the pope said that while alleviating human suffering \u201cis widely recognized as essential in principle,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/12\/world-watch-foreign-aid-a-moral-imperative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">humanitarian needs<\/a> have taken a back seat to \u201cinternational priorities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn effect, conflicts are \u2018fed\u2019 more readily than people are nourished. This reality reflects not only operational shortcomings but also a fundamental imbalance in political and moral priorities,\u201d the pope said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Headquartered in Rome, the WFP is the world\u2019s largest humanitarian organization addressing hunger and promoting food security. Present in over 120 countries and territories, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2021\/01\/pope-meets-with-head-of-world-food-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WFP provides food and humanitarian assistance<\/a>. As of June 2026, WFP has provided 15.8 billion food rations worldwide, the organization said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arriving at the WFP headquarters, the pope was welcomed by Cindy McCain, the organization\u2019s former executive director. McCain, the widow of the late U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., announced in February that she would step down as head of the WFP to focus on her health after suffering a mild stroke in October 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In her welcome address, McCain said for those suffering from hunger, the pope\u2019s voice was \u201cone of \u2014 if not the \u2014 the most powerful on earth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou have spoken for them with courage and with love \u2014 not as statistics, but as brothers and sisters, human beings made in the image of God, deserving of dignity, of care, and of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2023\/10\/pope-addresses-importance-of-water-on-world-food-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enough food to live and to thrive<\/a>,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pontiff urges global action against hunger<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his address, Pope Leo said the WFP\u2019s commitment to those in need \u201cresonates profoundly with the Catholic Church\u2019s mission to uphold human dignity and to foster fraternity, rooted in the Gospel\u2019s call to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2023\/10\/loving-your-neighbor-a-maryknoll-reflection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">love our neighbor<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reflecting on crises that have evolved from \u201cisolated events into persistent realities,\u201d the pope said that due to a lack of a \u201cshared ethical horizon,\u201d the world has instead shifted from \u201cmultilateralism toward a disorderly and conflict-ridden multipolarism with a prevailing sense of mistrust.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis trend reveals a striking paradox: unprecedented global productive capacity exists alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/08\/cholera-outbreak-accelerates-hunger-and-starvation-in-sudan-and-south-sudan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expanding zones of extreme vulnerability<\/a>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe same forces that drive economic growth often exacerbate exclusion and marginalization. Although alleviating human suffering is widely recognized as essential in principle, humanitarian concerns increasingly risk being relegated to a secondary place among international priorities,\u201d Pope Leo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pontiff also lamented the \u201cprogressive bureaucratization of solidarity\u201d coupled with \u201cthe quiet commodification of human life,\u201d which results in delayed assistance to those in need due to bureaucratic red tape and the access to essential aid, especially food, being influenced \u201cby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/09\/use-wealth-for-peace-not-war-says-the-pope\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">economic or strategic considerations<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calling for a \u201crenewed commitment to multilateral cooperation,\u201d the pope appealed to governments worldwide to increase resources for fighting hunger and \u201cto remove the obstacles that prevent aid from reaching those in need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAccess to adequate food is a fundamental human right grounded in the dignity of every person,\u201d he said. \u201cMeeting this need not only alleviates suffering but also addresses the underlying causes of geopolitical instability. Indeed, food security is an essential component of global and integral security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cThe world today could live without hunger\u201d\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After his address, the pope was escorted to a room where he held a video call with six WFP front-line workers stationed in various parts of the world, including Venezuela, Senegal, South Sudan and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/06\/church-aid-leader-beseiged-christians-in-lebanon-struggle-to-survive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lebanon<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Expressing his gratitude to the workers who have \u201crisked your lives to be in the places where you\u2019re working,\u201d Pope Leo assured them of the \u201cprayers and support for the worldwide community and especially the Catholic Church, which is oftentimes a partner in collaboration with the programs that you oversee.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cyril Noujeim, WFP Lebanon\u2019s Program Policy Officer, told the pope the difficulties of providing assistance in a country \u201cwhere we don\u2019t have stability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe don\u2019t know whether we are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/04\/philippines-church-supports-migrant-workers-hit-by-war-oil-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at war or in a ceasefire<\/a>, or in peace,\u201d he said. Despite the challenges, Noujeim said the WFP continues to deliver assistance in southern Lebanon, \u201calways making sure not to leave anyone behind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanking Noujeim for his work in Lebanon, the pope said that many don\u2019t often realize the \u201ccyclical progression\u201d in which \u201chunger oftentimes is a cause of conflict and conflict causes more hunger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe world today could live without hunger,\u201d Pope Leo added. \u201cThe resources should be available; the capacity for food production exists. And yet oftentimes, the resources are spent on promoting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/04\/pope-issues-urgent-appeal-to-trump-amid-escalating-tensions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">war and conflict<\/a> and other kinds of \u2014 if you will \u2014 less important end results.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, he said, \u201chunger continues to increase in some parts of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pope Leo thanks aid workers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Expressing his gratitude to the front-line workers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/04\/pope-leo-responds-to-trump-blessed-are-the-peacemakers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pope Leo<\/a> encouraged them to continue their work in delivering aid to those in need and invoked God\u2019s blessing in their \u201cvery important labor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before departing the WFP headquarters, Pope Leo also expressed his gratitude to dozens of WFP employees gathered outside, saying that he was \u201csincerely honored\u201d to be with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pope reflected on the value of community, which he said is needed in today\u2019s polarized world, \u201caffected by so many conflicts and wars where the destruction of human relationships continues because of so many different reasons, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/05\/magnifica-humanitas-warns-of-future-without-god\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including technology<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInstead of technology helping us to make a better world in which to live, it\u2019s oftentimes being used as a method of war destruction and death,\u201d Pope Leo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe work that you do, and perhaps even more than the work you do, the spirit that you share as you all work together in building a community and reaching out to those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/04\/maryknoll-priest-father-john-barth-is-a-conduit-for-aid-to-myanmar-earthquake-victims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">communities that are in need<\/a>, is indeed a special gift,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Featured image: Pope Leo XIV greets employees of the United Nations\u2019 World Food Program outside its Rome headquarters June 22, 2026.
