News<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(OSV News) \u2014 The&nbsp;Catholic&nbsp;Church in&nbsp;Mozambique&nbsp;is mourning the death of&nbsp;Bishop&nbsp;Os\u00f3rio Citora Afonso of Quelimane, who was found&nbsp;shot&nbsp;dead&nbsp;at his residence in the early hours of June 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHis body was found in a corridor of the episcopal residence,\u201d pontifical charity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchinneed.org\/pope-and-african-bishops-decry-death-of-mozambican-prelate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aid to the Church in Need<\/a> said in a June 6 press release. \u201cThe perpetrator of the crime remains unknown.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement sent to ACN, Archbishop In\u00e1cio Sa\u00fare of Nampula, president of the&nbsp;Mozambique&nbsp;bishops\u2019 conference, said that the prelate was found \u201clifeless and in strange circumstances that have yet to be clarified,\u201d and appealed for \u201cthe serenity of faith and fraternal solidarity\u201d from all in the face of this \u201csad event.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bishop&nbsp;Citora Afonso, a Consolata missionary, was allegedly&nbsp;shot&nbsp;in the chest, near the heart, ACN said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The news has left the Church in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/11\/christian-persecution-increasing-dramatically-report-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mozambique<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cin a state of shock.\u201d Archbishop Sa\u00fare said in his statement he received the news \u201cwith profound sorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The president of&nbsp;Mozambique&nbsp;also issued a statement expressing his \u201cdeep sorrow and consternation\u201d at the news of the&nbsp;bishop\u2019s death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Daniel Chapo described the loss as \u201cirreparable\u201d for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2021\/04\/mozambique-bishops-speak-out-against-violence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mozambican society<\/a> and for the Christian community, noting that&nbsp;Bishop&nbsp;Citora Afonso had \u201cdistinguished himself throughout his life by his humility, pastoral dedication, and his preaching of the values of peace and reconciliation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Spain, on the first day of his apostolic trip to that country, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/05\/gods-diplomat-pope-leo-xiv-speaks-gospel-to-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pope Leo XIV<\/a> \u201clearned with sorrow of the grave act of violence\u201d that caused the death of&nbsp;Bishop&nbsp;Citora Afonso, said a statement issued by the Holy See Press Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nearly a decade of religious persecution in Mozambique<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 54-year-old&nbsp;bishop&nbsp;had also been appointed apostolic administrator of the Archdiocese of Beira, replacing Archbishop Cl\u00e1udio Zunna, who had resigned April 10 for health reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pope \u201cjoins in prayer with the people of the Dioceses and of&nbsp;Mozambique&nbsp;in this hour of distress, that the Lord may grant them consolation, that he may protect each man and woman in his love and stay the hand of the violent,\u201d the press office statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The murder of the&nbsp;bishop&nbsp;\u201cadds yet another dark cloud over the Church in&nbsp;Mozambique,\u201d ACN said, as the country already grapples with \u201cterrorist violence in the north of the country, particularly in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/en\/church\/news\/2026-05\/mozambique-church-set-on-fire-by-jihadists.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cabo Delgado Province<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CISA News Africa reported that the murder brought \u201cto an abrupt end the life and ministry of one of&nbsp;Mozambique\u2019s most promising Church leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attack comes only a month after a&nbsp;Catholic&nbsp;church in northern&nbsp;Mozambique&nbsp;was targeted in an attack by the Islamic State group that has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2022\/09\/pope-francis-honors-sister-de-coppi-killed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carried out attacks<\/a> against Christians and Muslims in the country since 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Extremists attacked the historic St. Louis de Montfort Church in Meza, a town located in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, on April 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscirf.gov\/news-room\/releases-statements\/isis-affiliate-threatens-religious-freedom-mozambique\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom<\/a> stated that the Islamic State-Mozambique&nbsp;\u201chas carried out a sustained campaign of violence against both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/05\/pope-says-dialogue-with-muslims-is-key-to-lasting-peace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christian and Muslim<\/a> communities\u201d since 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the last two years, the commission said, it has focused its attacks on Christian-majority areas in the Cabo Delgado province, including burning 18 churches in villages in the Chi\u00fare district in 2024, and beheading six Christians in Ancuabe, the same district where the recently destroyed church was located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Attacks and political violence exacerbate the crisis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Diocese of Pemba, repeated attacks on parishes and churches in Cabo Delgado have contributed to a broader pattern of organized destruction of&nbsp;Catholic&nbsp;religious infrastructure, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/12\/african-bishops-cry-out-for-their-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forcing whole&nbsp;Catholic<\/a>&nbsp;parishes to flee,\u201d the commission stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deadly violence against opposition politicians has also shaken&nbsp;Mozambique&nbsp;in recent weeks. While the government has called the incidents isolated cases, opposition and civil society warn of a politically motivated assassination pattern, Deutsche Welle German media reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMozambique&nbsp;remains a priority country for ACN,\u201d said the organization which \u201chas supported the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2021\/05\/african-countries-register-highest-growth-in-christianity-globally-amid-persecution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">local Church<\/a> at many levels, not only through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2022\/05\/maryknoll-reflection-from-tanzania-for-the-fourth-sunday-of-easter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">humanitarian aid<\/a>, but also by promoting psychosocial support and the reconstruction of infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Featured image: <\/em><em>Bishop Os\u00f3rio Citora Afonso of Quelimane, Mozambique, speaks during a Mass of thanksgiving for the canonization of Giuseppe Allamano, founder of the Consolata Missionaries, in Turin, Oct. 24, 2024.
