{"id":6947,"date":"2026-05-26T12:43:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T12:43:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=6947"},"modified":"2026-06-10T12:46:51","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T12:46:51","slug":"disarm-ai-for-humanitys-sake-pope-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/disarm-ai-for-humanitys-sake-pope-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Disarm AI \u2018for Humanity\u2019s Sake,\u2019 Pope Says"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By Courtney Mares, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osvnews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OSV News<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VATICAN CITY (OSV News) \u2014&nbsp;Pope&nbsp;Leo XIV called for vigilance as he spoke at the Vatican press conference May 25 to present his first encyclical on artificial intelligence, saying his conversations with industry leaders \u2014 including \u201cvery troubling voices\u201d who warned of autonomous weapons systems beyond effective human governance \u2014 had led him to the conviction that AI \u201cneeds to be disarmed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking immediately after the promulgation of <em>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/20260515-magnifica-humanitas.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Magnifica&nbsp;Humanitas<\/a>: On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence,\u201d<\/em> the&nbsp;pope&nbsp;explained that he had consulted with scientists, engineers, policymakers, educators and parents as he was working on the encyclical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>\u2018Magnifica&nbsp;Humanitas\u2019<\/em> was born from listening,\u201d he said in Vatican City\u2019s Synod Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pope&nbsp;Leo described how in the past year he had listened to enthusiastic tech leaders, as well as \u201cparents and teachers who are deeply concerned for the future of younger generations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOther, very troubling voices have also reached me about increasingly autonomous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/01\/more-funds-for-poor-less-for-weapons-say-18-us-bishops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weapons<\/a> systems practically beyond any human reach to govern them effectively,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;pope&nbsp;added that he had also heard troubling accounts of algorithms that can block access to healthcare, employment and security on the basis of \u201cdata tainted by prejudice and injustice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFrom this listening matured a disturbing conviction expressed in <em>\u2018Magnifica&nbsp;Humanitas\u2019<\/em>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/09\/spirit-of-mission-is-ai-good-news-artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Artificial intelligence<\/a> needs to be disarmed,\u201d&nbsp;Pope&nbsp;Leo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/05\/gods-diplomat-pope-leo-xiv-speaks-gospel-to-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The&nbsp;pope<\/a>&nbsp;compared AI to nuclear energy, saying both must serve the common good rather than become instruments of domination. He invoked St. Paul\u2019s first letter to the Thessalonians, \u201cLet us not sleep as others do, but let us keep awake,\u201d as a call for vigilance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Holy Father\u2019s concern over large-scale job losses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pope&nbsp;Leo dedicated the final chapter of <em>\u201cMagnifica&nbsp;Humanitas\u201d<\/em> to AI in warfare and the need for \u201cthe most rigorous ethical constraints\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/09\/use-wealth-for-peace-not-war-says-the-pope\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proactive peacebuilding<\/a> \u201cto curb the technological arms race.\u201d In that chapter,&nbsp;Pope&nbsp;Leo wrote that \u201ctoday, more than ever, without prejudice to the right to self-defense in the strictest sense, it is important to reaffirm that the \u2018just war\u2019 theory, which has all too often been used to justify any kind of war, is now outdated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;pope\u2019s presence at the Vatican press conference <a href=\"https:\/\/maryknollogc.org\/resources\/ten-beautiful-quotes-in-magnifica-humanitas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">presenting the encyclical<\/a> was a novelty, as was the presence of the AI tech executive Christopher Olah, co-founder of Anthropic, the AI research and development firm behind the Claude AI assistant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Olah warned that \u201cthere is a real possibility that AI will displace human labor at very large scale.\u201d He underlined the importance of having people without the financial incentives of tech executives pay close attention to AI development as \u201cearnest, thoughtful, critics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;pope&nbsp;thanked Olah for accepting the Vatican\u2019s invitation to take part in the launch of the encyclical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat a great sign of hope that, with our differences, we can listen to one another,\u201d&nbsp;Pope&nbsp;Leo said, adding that such an exchange \u201cclearly bespeaks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/04\/holy-see-at-un-warns-of-need-for-nuclear-disarmament-ai-regulation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the gravity of the moment<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pope&nbsp;Leo noted that disarming AI is not enough, but \u201cwe must build.\u201d He highlighted the opening line from his encyclical in which he wrote that humanity today faces \u201ca pivotal choice: either to construct a new Tower of Babel or to build the city in which God and humanity dwell together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pope warns about AI risks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the press conference, the&nbsp;pope&nbsp;drew on his missionary experience in Peru, recalling the 2017 floods that devastated communities in the country\u2019s north and the painstaking work of rebuilding that followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRebuilding does not mean simply replacing what has been destroyed,\u201d he said. \u201cIt means repairing bonds, restoring trust, and reawakening hope in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He closed by inviting both Catholics and the broader public to engage seriously with the challenges AI presents, saying the Church brings \u201ca wisdom concerning the human that our present time desperately needs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery person is unique and irreplaceable,\u201d he said, \u201ca free and intelligent subject with a conscience, capable of seeking God, serving one another, caring for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/05\/our-common-home-a-maryknoll-reflection-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our common home<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Featured image: A heavy strike drone of the 422nd Unmanned Systems Regiment of the Ukrainian Armed Forces flies with an attached air bomb over a training ground, amid Russia\u2019s attack on Ukraine, in Zaporizhzhia region, Ukraine, March 23, 2026.
