{"id":6752,"date":"2026-05-13T14:03:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T14:03:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=6752"},"modified":"2026-05-25T14:23:43","modified_gmt":"2026-05-25T14:23:43","slug":"nepal-government-displaces-thousands-in-forced-eviction-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/nepal-government-displaces-thousands-in-forced-eviction-drive\/","title":{"rendered":"Nepal Government Displaces Thousands in Forced Eviction Drive"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucanews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UCA News Reporter<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protests have erupted in Nepal after authorities began demolishing squatter settlements of the poor across the country, ignoring criticism from rights groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is a growing fear of long-term displacement and lack of proper rehabilitation among the landless squatters and informal settlers living in different parts of the country,\u201d said Lyam Bahadur Darji, chairperson of <a href=\"https:\/\/nlrfnepal.org.np\/11-point-demand-letter-submitted-to-the-ministry-of-land-management-cooperatives-and-poverty-alleviation-through-the-national-land-rights-forum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nepal Land Rights Forum<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The non-governmental organization advocating for land-deprived communities, along with hundreds of affected people and activists, organized protests in Kathmandu on May 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protests demanded an immediate halt to the demolition drive, claiming it was carried out without&nbsp;adequate protection and housing facilities as promised earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nationwide eviction drive to remove squatter settlements along riverbeds and highways, on public and government-owned land, was launched on April 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darji said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2018\/03\/then-the-rains-flooding-landslides-in-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the poor<\/a> and landless squatters hoped for a better future when the new government, headed by rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah, took office in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 100-point reform agenda issued by the prime minister on March 27 pledged to complete an integrated digital record and verification of landless squatters and unmanaged settlers within 60 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government was formed after the historic Gen-Z movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe believed that the voices of landless communities would be heard and be adequately addressed, but instead the government targeted the poor and vulnerable people first,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Evictions leave thousands displaced amid renewed land debate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/04\/sisters-help-transform-lives-of-the-disabled-in-nepal-at-center-started-by-fr-adam-gudalefsky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nepal<\/a> has an estimated 1.2 million landless and internal migrants, according to the Land Problem Resolution Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are mostly settled on public land along riversides, highways, on government land, and in forests across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2021\/09\/father-joseph-thaler-call-within-the-call\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nepal<\/a> has formed at least 19 commissions since 1990 to address the issue, but with limited success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe government has the right and responsibility to protect public lands. However, the law enforcement, including the eviction drives, must be guided by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2021\/03\/lifelines-for-the-least-of-these-in-nepal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">justice and humanity<\/a>,\u201d Pastor Tanka Subedi told UCA News on May 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Subedi, a human rights defender, stressed that not everyone living on public land is a criminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese are poor and vulnerable families, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2018\/03\/hands-for-nepal-earthquake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">victims of natural disasters<\/a>, who have nowhere to go,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The evictions have left over 15,000 displaced in the national capital, Kathmandu, alone. Entire families were forced to evict their homes on short notice, within 24 hours, activists said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Office of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/press-releases\/2026\/05\/un-experts-urge-nepal-halt-mass-forced-evictions-kathmandu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights<\/a> on May 11 said in a statement that the forceful evictions of thousands of people by the authorities risk violating Nepal\u2019s obligations under international human rights law and its own constitutional protections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are deeply troubled by reports that thousands of people \u2013 many of whom are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/05\/wars-disasters-drive-record-global-internal-displacement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">internally displaced<\/a> and in situations of acute vulnerability \u2013 are being evicted without adequate safeguards,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also mentioned that the U.N. experts\u2019 group \u201cis appalled that two residents were found dead during the demolition drive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Featured image: People watch as heavy construction equipment is used to demolish squatter settlements near the Bagmati River in Kathmandu on May 1.
