{"id":6702,"date":"2026-05-06T22:15:35","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T22:15:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=6702"},"modified":"2026-05-07T22:17:42","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T22:17:42","slug":"bishops-in-africa-decry-xenophobic-attacks-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/bishops-in-africa-decry-xenophobic-attacks-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Bishops in Africa Decry Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>By Fredrick Nzwili, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osvnews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OSV News<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(OSV News) \u2014 As xenophobic attacks continued to unfold in South Africa, Catholic bishops in Africa urged the government to quickly tame the violence, amid reports of deaths and injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/06\/drcs-cardinal-ambongo-appeals-to-trump-africa-is-important-to-the-u-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu<\/a>, president of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar, known as SECAM, condemned the violence as un-African amid armed groups marching to flush out the foreign black African migrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardinal Ambongo said&nbsp;SECAM&nbsp;is \u201cdeeply concerned\u201d about the recent events, which \u201chave been marked by acts of xenophobic violence against nationals of other African countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/secam.org\/on-social-tensions-and-acts-of-violence-targeting-nationals-of-other-african-countries-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement was issued May 5<\/a>, following the attacks on black African migrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such attacks are not new since the end of apartheid in&nbsp;South&nbsp;Africa, but fears have mounted as the latest wave continued to surge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since late April, mobs \u2014 armed with clubs, machetes and spears \u2014 have been seen marching through the streets of key cities, demanding the departure of foreign nationals from other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/07\/cardinal-ambongo-without-church-no-life-no-hope-and-no-future-for-many-africans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">African countries<\/a>. The protesters are rallying around lack of jobs, high unemployment and insecurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attacks and intimidation have been reported in key towns, including Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, East London and Johannesburg, among other places. In most regions, vigilantes have stopped people and asked them to present their documents before demanding they leave their country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Properties believed to be owned by foreign nationals are being targeted, looted or vandalized, with several deaths confirmed, including five Ethiopians and two Nigerians, according to local press reports. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theeastafrican.co.ke\/tea\/news\/southern-africa\/xenophobic-attacks-strain-south-africa-ties-with-african-peers-5443918\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deaths and attacks<\/a> have since drawn international concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2022\/04\/unaccompanied-minors-face-peril-en-route-to-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Any violence<\/a> directed against foreigners constitutes not only a grave violation of the human person but also a negation of the foundations of universal brotherhood and the Africa we want,\u201d said the cardinal in the SECAM statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">African bishops stand with migrants affected<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The cardinal expressed \u201cfraternal and ecclesial solidarity\u201d with the Southern African&nbsp;Catholic&nbsp;Bishops\u2019 Conference \u201cfor its prophetic stance in support of African migrants who are victims of discrimination and&nbsp;xenophobia,\u201d and extended&nbsp;SECAM\u2019s sympathy \u201cto all victims of this violence and to their families, who have been severely affected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South&nbsp;African&nbsp;Catholic&nbsp;bishops have frequently condemned the violence, describing it as acts against human dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIrrespective of legal status, all have a right in&nbsp;South&nbsp;Africa&nbsp;to access medical care and a right to schooling,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/collegeofcardinalsreport.com\/cardinals\/stephen-brislin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cardinal Stephen Brislin<\/a> of Johannesburg emphasized in October, when attacks were already occurring. \u201cNo group has the authority to abrogate the prerogative of law enforcement by mob action.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South&nbsp;Africa\u2019s national statistics agency indicated that there are about 3 million immigrants living in the country, roughly 5% of the population, including from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2021\/03\/zimbabwes-president-mourns-maryknoll-sister-who-supported-independence-struggle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zimbabwe<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/11\/pope-leo-demands-immediate-release-of-300-children-and-teachers-kidnapped-in-nigeria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nigeria<\/a> and Ghana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nigeria has since announced voluntary repatriation with at least 130 nationals registering to return home. Ghana has repatriated a national who was captured in a video being harassed in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardinal Ambongo said the South African attacks violated African principles and continental law, undermined Africa\u2019s fundamental rights and contradicted the continent\u2019s core values, such as African solidarity, the spirit of Ubuntu \u2014 \u201cI am because we are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bishops call for unity and government action<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>He called on the African Union to fully assume its role as guardian of continental values, ensure the effective implementation of African legal instruments on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/press-releases\/2022\/07\/south-africa-un-experts-condemn-xenophobic-violence-and-racial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">human rights<\/a>, and to encourage the establishment of prevention and early warning mechanisms against xenophobic violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe credibility of&nbsp;Africa, which aspires to become a key player on the international stage, is at stake,\u201d said Cardinal Ambongo as he called on the people to reject all forms of violence, hatred and stigmatization, discourses that divides African peoples, and to promote a culture of encounter, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/07\/kenyan-bishops-urge-protestors-to-seek-dialogue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dialogue<\/a>, and African brotherhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are all called to rediscover an ethic of closeness, where the stranger is not perceived as a threat but recognized as a brother or sister of whom we are the guardians,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The African Union, through its Commission on Human and People\u2019s Rights, expressed a grave concern at the attacks. Solomon Ayele Dersso, the AU\u2019s country rapporteur in South Africa, called on the South African government to take action with prompt, concrete and sustained measures to prevent recurrence and ensure accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTake decisive measures to dismantle and prevent the operation of vigilante groups engaging in unlawful enforcement activities,\u201d urged Dersso in an April 27 statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Featured image: A child looks on next to her mother, who is holding a placard, during a protest march by members of a South African anti-xenophobia organization in Johannesburg March 26, 2022.
