ABOARD THE PAPAL FLIGHT TO ALGIERS (OSV News) \u2014 Pope Leo XIV said he has \u201cno fear\u201d of President Donald Trump\u2019s administration and responded to Trump\u2019s criticism by telling journalists that his message to the U.S. president is \u201cthe message of the Gospel: Blessed are the peacemakers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking April 13 aboard the papal plane, a chartered ITA Airways flight, en route from Rome to Algiers, the pope said that he had seen Trump\u2019s recent social media post lashing out at him the night before the papal trip<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have no fear, neither of the Trump administration nor speaking out loudly of the message of the Gospel, which is what I believe I am here to do, what the Church is here to do,\u201d the pope said during the flight in a video recorded by OSV News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pope spoke in response to Trump\u2019s comments April 12 calling the pope \u201cweak on crime\u201d<\/a> and \u201cterrible for foreign policy,\u201d as tensions escalate in the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are not politicians,\u201d Pope Leo said. \u201cWe are not looking to make foreign policy \u2026 with the same perspective that he might understand it, but I do believe in the message of the Gospel: \u2018Blessed are the peacemakers\u2019 is the message that the world needs to hear today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pope Leo added that he did not intend to engage in a political dispute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI do not look at my role as being political, a politician,\u201d the pope said. \u201cI don\u2019t want to get into debate with him. I don\u2019t think that the message of the Gospel is meant to be abused in the way that some people are doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added, \u201cThe message of the Church, my message, the message of the Gospel: Blessed are the peacemakers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSomeone has to stand up and say there\u2019s a better way\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pope Leo has been a staunch critic of combat operations generally, including those initiated by the U.S. and Israel against Iran on Feb. 28. He also condemned Trump\u2019s threat<\/a> to wipe out Iran\u2019s \u201cwhole civilization,\u201d which the president later backed down from, citing negotiations with Pakistani mediators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pontiff held a special evening prayer vigil for peace in St. Peter\u2019s Basilica April 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI will continue to speak out loudly against war, looking to promote peace<\/a>, promoting dialogue and multilateral relationships among the states to look for just solutions to problems,\u201d Pope Leo said on the way to Algiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToo many people are suffering in the world today. Too many innocent people are being killed. And I think someone has to stand up and say there\u2019s a better way,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump, writing on Truth Social platform late April 12 said he did not want \u201ca Pope who thinks it\u2019s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want a Pope who thinks it\u2019s terrible that America attacked Venezuela<\/a>, a Country that was sending massive amounts of Drugs into the United States and, even worse, emptying their prisons, including murderers, drug dealers, and killers, into our Country. And I don\u2019t want a Pope who criticizes the President of the United States because I\u2019m doing exactly what I was elected, IN A LANDSLIDE, to do, setting Record Low Numbers in Crime, and creating the Greatest Stock Market in History,\u201d the president wrote on Truth Social.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pope Leo commented, \u201cIt\u2019s ironic \u2014 the name of the site itself. Say no more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pope Leo, the first U.S.-born pope, has called for the rejection of nuclear weapons<\/a>, and there is no evidence that he supports Iran having such weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vicar of Christ, not a political figure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Trump claimed Pope Leo was elected as pope because the Church thought an American pontiff would be \u201cthe best way to deal with President Donald J. Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf I wasn\u2019t in the White House, Leo wouldn\u2019t be in the Vatican,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several journalists aboard the plane asked Pope Leo about Trump\u2019s comments to which the pope explained, \u201cTo put my message on the same plane as what the president has attempted to do here, I think is not understanding what the message of the Gospel<\/a> is, and I am sorry to hear that but I will continue on with what I believe is the mission of the Church in the world today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pope Leo spoke to journalists on the first flight of the pope\u2019s 11-day, four-country tour of Africa in which he will visit Algeria, Cameroon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a separate statement late April 12, Archbishop Paul S. Coakley of Oklahoma City, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops<\/a>, said he was \u201cdisheartened\u201d by Trump\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPope Leo is not his rival; nor is the pope a politician,\u201d Archbishop Coakley said. \u201cHe is the Vicar of Christ who speaks from the truth of the Gospel and for the care of souls.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
