{"id":6485,"date":"2026-03-19T03:27:01","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T03:27:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=6485"},"modified":"2026-04-08T03:28:57","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T03:28:57","slug":"more-than-170-people-killed-in-attacks-on-civilians-in-south-sudan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/more-than-170-people-killed-in-attacks-on-civilians-in-south-sudan\/","title":{"rendered":"More Than 170 People Killed in Attacks on Civilians in South Sudan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>By Silas Mwale Isenjia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewtnnews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EWTN News<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>KHARTOUM, Sudan \u2014 The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops\u2019 (USCCB) Committee on International Justice and Peace has expressed solidarity with the Church in South Sudan following the reported killing of at least 170 people in two separate incidents in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement issued by the chairman of the USCCB <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/committees\/international-justice-and-peace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Committee on International Justice and Peace<\/a> and shared with ACI Africa, the sister service of EWTN News in Africa, on March 16, the bishops echoed the position of the Sudan and South Sudan Catholic Bishops\u2019 Conference, stating that the killing reflects a disregard for the sanctity of human life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI write to express our profound ecclesial solidarity with the Church in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/08\/cholera-outbreak-accelerates-hunger-and-starvation-in-sudan-and-south-sudan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South Sudan<\/a>, as you mourn the killing of approximately 200 innocent civilians in Ayod County in Jonglei state and Abiemnhom County in the Ruweng Administrative area,\u201d Bishop Abdallah Elias Zaidan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bishop Zaidan added in reference to the March 2 statement: \u201cThese acts represent not only a tragic loss of life but a fresh descent into the abyss of human depravity, where the sanctity of life, a sacred gift from God, is trampled upon with alarming impunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: \u201cOur committee has long voiced urgent concern over the mass destruction and loss of life caused by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/03\/south-sudans-people-suffer-a-heavy-burden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">civil conflict<\/a> in South Sudan. We are deeply alarmed by the recent escalation of violence and further intensified <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2023\/02\/an-unforgettable-experience-with-pope-francis-and-the-idps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">humanitarian crisis<\/a>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bishop Zaidan, the local ordinary of the Maronite Eparchy of Our Lady of Lebanon, said that the Catholic bishops in the United States share in the conviction that \u201cevery massacre is a defeat of our humanity\u201d as highlighted by the Sudan and South Sudan Catholic Bishops\u2019 Conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe urge the Catholic faithful in the U.S., and all people of goodwill, to pray and work for an end to the cycles of trauma, retaliation, and violence gravely afflicting communities across the country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">U.S. Catholic bishops stands in solidarity following attacks on civilians<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/04\/usccb-ends-cooperative-agreements-with-us-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">USCCB<\/a> solidarity statement comes amid growing concern over renewed violence in parts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2022\/03\/hope-shines-through-in-south-sudan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South Sudan<\/a>, where armed clashes and intercommunal attacks reportedly continue to undermine fragile peace efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reports from Ayod County in Jonglei state indicated that on Feb. 21, government-linked forces allegedly lured villagers in Pankor village with promises of food aid before opening fire on the gathering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least 22 people, including women and children, were reportedly killed in the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Witnesses described the incident as a \u201cdeath trap,\u201d fueling fears that unarmed civilians are increasingly being deliberately targeted in the country\u2019s continuing conflicts involving rival armed factions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A second and more deadly incident reportedly occurred in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/insurgents-raid-village-south-sudan-169-people-killed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Abiemnhom County<\/a> in the Ruweng Administrative Area between March 1\u20132.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local officials have reported that armed youths from neighboring Unity state stormed the county headquarters, attacking government offices and civilian areas. The assault reportedly left at least 169 people dead, including civilians, security personnel, and local government officials such as the county commissioner and executive director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the attack, homes and markets were set ablaze before government forces regained control of the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Women, children, and elderly residents were among those killed, while more than 1,000 civilians fled to seek refuge at a United Nations peacekeeping base as fighting intensified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">USCCB mobilizes support for the people of South Sudan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In their statement dated March 10 and addressed to the president of the Integral Human Development Commission of the Sudan and South Sudan Catholic Bishops\u2019 Conference, Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicdioceseoftomburayambio.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Diocese of Tombura-Yambio<\/a>, the Catholic bishops in the United States pledged to reach out to the international community for humanitarian assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe also seek to amplify your call for international assistance in addressing needs for basic humanitarian services, pastoral care, and psychosocial support for the millions currently in distress,\u201d Bishop Zaidan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He indicated that in the coming days, the faithful in parishes across the United States will contribute to the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/national-collection\/catholic-relief-services-collection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Catholic Relief Services (CRS)<\/a> collection, one of the means through which the U.S. Catholic community can offer tangible support to the people of South Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. bishops further applauded the work of organizations like <a href=\"https:\/\/solidarityssudan.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Solidarity with South Sudan<\/a>, through which Catholic religious congregations help strengthen the people\u2019s capacity to build a more just and peaceful society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe trust that Our Lord accompanies the people of South Sudan through their unthinkable suffering, particularly in this Lenten period,\u201d said Bishop Zaidan, who is also a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ololb.org\/content\/congregation-maronite-lebanese-missionaries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Congregation of the Lebanese Maronite Missionaries<\/a> (Maronite).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe pray that the recent cascade of violence may be imminently halted and the most vulnerable protected.
