{"id":6473,"date":"2026-03-16T03:18:04","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T03:18:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=6473"},"modified":"2026-04-08T03:19:47","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T03:19:47","slug":"maryknoll-joint-leadership-statement-on-u-s-israel-war-on-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/maryknoll-joint-leadership-statement-on-u-s-israel-war-on-iran\/","title":{"rendered":"Maryknoll Joint Leadership Statement on U.S.-Israel War on Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The leadership of Maryknoll missioners has called upon all sides to cease fire in the escalating Middle East conflict that began Feb. 28 when Israeli and United States forces launched attacks on Iran, and to return to the negotiation table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the joint statement, the leaders of the <a href=\"https:\/\/maryknollsociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollsisters.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryknoll Sisters<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/mklm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryknoll Lay Missioners<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollaffiliates.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryknoll Affiliates<\/a> added their voices to \u201ca global chorus\u201d pleading for an end to the violence and a resumption of the \u201cdifficult, sacred work\u201d of negotiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mission organizations echo calls from Catholic leaders around the world, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/03\/pope-urges-peace-warns-about-wider-middle-east-conflict\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pope Leo XIV<\/a>, for an end to the fighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emphasizing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/03\/lebanese-maronite-catholic-priest-killed-by-israeli-tank-fire-in-southern-lebanon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">impact of the conflict on innocent civilians<\/a>, the Maryknoll leadership said: \u201cWe mourn every life lost in this spiral of violence, and we feel the trembling of families caught in the crossfire of a war they did not choose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The following is the text of the Maryknoll Joint Leadership Statement:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The four organizations of the Maryknoll family \u2014 the Sisters, Fathers and Brothers, Lay Missioners and Affiliates \u2014 speak today from a place of deep sorrow and shared hope. For over a century, our missioners have crossed borders to accompany communities in the Global South, sitting at the tables of those the world often forgets or disregards. Today, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/03\/us-israeli-war-with-iran-threatens-crisis-for-broader-asia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the shadow of war<\/a> between the United States, Israel and Iran stretches across the Middle East, we do not see a conflict of \u201cinterests\u201d or \u201cassets.\u201d We see the faces of our neighbors. We mourn every life lost in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/03\/attacks-on-iran-a-shocked-world-fears-consequences-of-ongoing-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spiral of violence<\/a>, and we feel the trembling of families caught in the crossfire of a war they did not choose. We join a global chorus in pleading for a stop to the fire, urging leaders to set aside their weapons and return to the difficult, sacred work of the negotiation table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a world increasingly divided by labels, we reject the idea that any nation or people exists outside the circle of our common humanity. When leaders speak of threats to civilization, they risk blinding us all to the truth that we are one human family, bound together by the same joys and the same fragile breath. We believe that true peace is not just a quiet battlefield; it is a vibrant enterprise of justice. It cannot be built upon the ruins of cities or the shattered lives of civilians, for every act of indiscriminate destruction is a wound dealt to the heart of God. We urge those in power to look past the cold logic of military dominance and rediscover the culture of encounter \u2014 a way of seeing the \u201cother\u201d not as a target, but as a brother or sister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we journey through this season of Lent, a time of reflection and renewal, we are reminded that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/01\/closing-holy-doors-pope-continues-to-call-for-peace-service-mercy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">being a peacemaker<\/a> is not a passive wish but a courageous choice. We call upon the leaders of the United States, Israel and Iran to make the courageous choice for dialogue over destruction. We advocate for an immediate de-escalation that protects the innocent, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/12\/dialogue-diplomacy-can-lead-to-lasting-peace-in-ukraine-pope-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">commitment to diplomacy<\/a> that honors international law, and the swift, unhindered delivery of aid to those whose lives have been upended.
