{"id":6468,"date":"2026-03-12T03:11:25","date_gmt":"2026-03-12T03:11:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=6468"},"modified":"2026-04-08T03:17:46","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T03:17:46","slug":"fourth-sunday-of-lent-a-maryknoll-reflection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/fourth-sunday-of-lent-a-maryknoll-reflection\/","title":{"rendered":"Fourth Sunday of Lent: A Maryknoll Reflection"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/03\/debt-burden-in-poor-countries-forgive-our-debts-a-maryknoll-lenten-reflection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kathleen Reiley, M.M.<\/a><\/em><br><br>Fourth Sunday of Lent<br>March 15, 2026<br><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/031526.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 Sm 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a | Eph 5:8-14 | Jn 9:1-41<\/a><br><br><em>I am the light of the world, says the Lord; whoever follows me will have the light of life. \u2014 John 8:12<\/em><br><br>In the midst of so much heartbreaking news these days, how uplifting it is to realize that Christ is the light of the world and that we who follow him will have the light of life.<br><br>I pray that in the face of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2026\/03\/pope-urges-peace-warns-about-wider-middle-east-conflict\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">so much darkness in our society<\/a>, we may have the courage of the blind man in today\u2019s Gospel reading.<br><br>The Pharisees are stymied by the blind man whom Jesus cured: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0839\/__PXH.HTM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Give glory to God<\/a>! For our part, we know that this man is a sinner.\u201d The man answered, \u201cIf he is a sinner, I do not know. One thing I do know is that I was blind and now I see.\u201d They said to him, \u201cWhat did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?\u201d He replied, \u201cI told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?\u201d At this, they hurled abuse at him: \u201cYou are that man\u2019s disciple,\u201d they said, \u201cwe are disciples of Moses! We know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not know where this one is from.\u201d The man replied, \u201cThis is what is so amazing, that you do not know where he is from, yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if one is devout and does his will, he listens to him.\u201d<br><br>Overwhelmed by so much human-caused oppression and suffering in our world today, can we speak as boldly to those in authority and be the \u201clight of Christ\u201d shining with love, care and compassion?<br>As a volunteer at the <a href=\"https:\/\/arrupe-refugee.jp\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arrupe Refugee Center<\/a> in Kamakura, Japan, I ask God to help me be a ray of God\u2019s love and care for the refugees we serve as they face such an uncertain future. I believe all of us are called to be the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/03\/spirit-of-mission-christ-our-light\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">light of Christ<\/a>,\u201d filled with the joy of knowing the Paschal Mystery is the way to true Life.<br><br>I pray that in the face of so much darkness in our society, we may have the courage of the blind man in today\u2019s Gospel.<br><br><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollsisters.org\/sisters\/sister-kathleen-reiley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryknoll Sister Kathleen Reiley,<\/a> who joined the congregation in 1963, has served for most of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LzDORl-gdu8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">her mission life in Japan<\/a>. She first ministered to marginalized populations such as day laborers, abandoned children and alcoholics. In 1989, she began volunteering as a counselor at the National Cancer Center Hospital in Tokyo, where she helped found a home for families of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2020\/05\/reiley-japan-a-man-on-a-cross\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">children with cancer<\/a>. She now volunteers at the Arrupe Refugee Center in Kamakura.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:39px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-essential-blocks-row alignfull  root-eb-row-xftej\"><div class=\"eb-parent-wrapper eb-parent-eb-row-xftej \"><div class=\"eb-row-root-container eb-row-xftej\" data-id=\"eb-row-xftej\"><div class=\"eb-row-wrapper\"><div class=\"eb-row-inner\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-essential-blocks-column  root-eb-column-lxmkv\"><div class=\"eb-parent-wrapper eb-parent-eb-column-lxmkv \"><div class=\"eb-column-wrapper eb-column-lxmkv\"><div class=\"eb-column-inner\">\n<p><strong>Not on Everest: An Easter Poem<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The greatest adventure in all the world or the universe is when the God who abandons us returns. John of the Cross calls it \u201cdark night\u201d but then he talks about dawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No darkness, no dawn. No abandon, no encounter. No death, no resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as Jesus had to go through his dark night, we too have to go through our very own. Like the disciples on their way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/photo_meditations\/on-the-bumpy-road-to-emmaus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Emmaus<\/a>, there are moments when we feel lost, perhaps moments like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as the mystic says, we find our way only in darkness. So, the great adventure isn\u2019t on Mount Everest or in outer space, but in the space of your hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like the morning star, there is not much light, but the promise is great. A new day, a new life begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guess we all have our Everest to climb. But in all the beauty and joy of it all, when God breaks through, breaks through the darkness and returns to us, we call it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/10\/the-risen-christ-brings-joy-hope-along-lifes-journey-pope-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resurrection<\/a>.
