(OSV News) \u2014 Data showing most individuals in immigration detention do not have violent criminal records highlights ongoing concerns expressed by the nation\u2019s Catholic bishops over the Trump administration immigration crackdown, said an official with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CBS News reported Feb. 9 that \u201cless than 14% of nearly 400,000 immigrants arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in President Trump\u2019s first year back in the White House had charges or convictions for violent criminal offenses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The news outlet cited an internal Department of Homeland Security document it had obtained, showing almost 40% of those arrested lacked a criminal record<\/a> altogether, and were accused of civil immigration offenses \u2014 such as being in the U.S. without legal authorization or overstaying a visa \u2014 that are usually adjudicated in civil court proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The internal document, which aligns with data compiled by Syracuse University, contrasts sharply with Trump administration claims it is targeting the violent criminals in its sweeping immigration detention operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An immigration approach based on mercy and dignity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe data we are seeing related to the demographics of people being arrested, detained and deported<\/a>, along with the real-life human impacts these statistics represent, underscore precisely why the U.S. bishops, in their special message last November, expressed their opposition to the \u2018indiscriminate mass deportation of people,’\u201d David Spicer, policy and engagement director for the USCCB\u2019s Secretariat of Migration, told OSV News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe vast majority of Americans, including the bishops themselves, support immigration<\/a> enforcement efforts that prioritize those in our country who pose genuine threats to national security or public safety,\u201d Spicer explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, he said, \u201ca sweeping and at times punitive approach to enforcement \u2014 which is seemingly driven by numerical quotas \u2014 leads to, as the bishops have said, an environment that \u2018undermines the already limited due process provided to noncitizens, threatens family unity<\/a>, and foments discrimination.’\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Catholic social teaching defends human dignity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Catholic social teaching on immigration balances three interrelated principles \u2014 the right of persons to migrate in order to sustain their lives and those of their families, the right of a country to regulate its borders and control immigration, and a nation\u2019s duty to regulate its borders with justice and mercy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRespecting human dignity<\/a> and upholding the rule of law are not in conflict,\u201d Spicer stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also noted that the U.S. is also \u201cgrappling with the consequences of a woefully inadequate immigration system that is in desperate need of meaningful reform,\u201d adding, \u201cwithout that, we will continue to see outcomes that are inconsistent with fundamental American values.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spicer quoted St. John Paul II\u2019s 1995 encyclical, \u201cEvangelium Vitae<\/a>\u201c<\/em> (\u201cThe Gospel of Life\u201d): \u201cA society lacks solid foundations when, on the one hand, it asserts values such as the dignity of the person, justice and peace, but then, on the other hand, radically acts to the contrary by allowing or tolerating a variety of ways in which human life is devalued and violated<\/a>, especially where it is weak or marginalized.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, said Spicer, \u201cAs Catholics guided by the Gospel and Church teaching, we are left asking ourselves: Is the current approach to immigration and immigrants furthering the common good? Is it promoting human life and dignity, especially regarding the poorest and most vulnerable among us? Is it strengthening families and communities?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf our answer to any of these questions is \u2018no,\u2019 then our faith calls us to work toward something better<\/a> \u2014 and to reflect it in our words and deeds,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
