(OSV News) \u2014 Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel laureate Mar\u00eda Corina Machado asked for Pope Leo XIV\u2019s help in securing the release of political prisoners in the country following the capture of Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vatican announced the meeting<\/a> Jan. 12, which took place in the library of the Vatican Apostolic Palace, but gave no details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, in a statement published on X by the Venezuelan political opposition<\/a> coalition, Comando con Venezuela, Machado said she sought the pope\u2019s help in seeking the release of more than 1,000 political prisoners \u201cand for an immediate transition to democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToday, I had the blessing and honor of being able to share with His Holiness and express our gratitude for his monitoring of events in our country,\u201d Machado said. \u201cI also conveyed to him the strength of the Venezuelan people<\/a>, who remain firm and in prayer for Venezuela\u2019s freedom, and I asked him to intercede for all Venezuelans who remain kidnapped and missing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the statement, the opposition leader reiterated to the pope that the will of the Venezuelan people was seen in their electing Edmundo Gonz\u00e1lez, whose victory in the 2024 election was overturned by the Venezuelan election authority, which was loyal to Maduro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMachado highlighted the spiritual struggle Venezuelans have faced for years and said that finally, with the accompaniment of the Church and unprecedented pressure from the U.S. government, the \u2018defeat of evil\u2019 in the country is drawing near,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comando con Venezuela said that Machado also met Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican secretary of state, after her meeting with the pope<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pope\u2019s meeting with the opposition leader comes just over a week after Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured Jan. 3 in a U.S. military operation ordered by President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maduro and his wife were transported to New York, where they are currently facing narco-terrorism conspiracy charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pope Leo urges dialogue for Venezuela\u2019s common good<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After Maduro\u2019s capture, Pope Leo expressed concerns over the United States\u2019 increasing military presence<\/a> in the Caribbean, and called for \u201cthe common good of the peoples\u201d to be placed above \u201cpartisan interests.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn this regard, I renew my appeal to respect the will of the Venezuelan people, and to safeguard the human and civil rights of all, ensuring a future of stability and concord,\u201d the pope said Jan. 9 during a meeting with members of the diplomatic corps accredited to the Vatican.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a Jan. 8 briefing at the Vatican press office, Colombian Cardinal Luis Jos\u00e9 Rueda Aparicio<\/a> of Bogota told journalists the situation in Venezuela was on the mind of the cardinals attending the extraordinary consistory Jan. 7-8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe carry it in our hearts; we suffer through it; it pains us all,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cardinal Rueda said the pope had also shown great concern for Venezuela and has made \u201ca consistent effort to invite parties toward the paths of dialogue and consensus. He is calling for peace; he is calling to truly build peace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe wants nations to come together with respect for human rights, sovereignty and the self-determination of their own people to find answers to the problems currently being experienced,\u201d the cardinal added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While some believed Machado, a former member of Venezuela\u2019s national assembly, would receive U.S. support to govern the ailing country after Maduro\u2019s capture, Trump said she lacked support in Venezuela and instead backed Delcy Rodriguez, Maduro\u2019s vice president, as acting president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Reuters, the White House criticized the Nobel Committee\u2019s choice of Machado over Trump, who has publicly coveted the award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Machado, who dedicated the award to Trump and the people of Venezuela, offered to give her award to Trump in gratitude for Maduro\u2019s capture. However, in a rare statement, the Norwegian Nobel Institute announced that the Nobel Prize<\/a> could not be shared or transferred to another person, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview with Fox News, Trump said he would be meeting with Machado in the coming days, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
