(OSV News) \u2014 The Catholic bishop ministering in Ukraine\u2019s only surviving Black Sea port has urged Americans to continue upholding truth and justice, following new talks between Presidents Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI remember how we listened to the Voice of America radio station when I was a child under Soviet rule, and always knew it presented the truth, standing up for human rights and suffering people<\/a>,\u201d said Bishop Stanislav Szyrokoradiuk of Odesa-Simferopol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo hear this same voice today defending the evildoer and demanding we reward him for his crimes is deeply shocking and hurtful. Yet we know this isn\u2019t the true voice of Americans,\u201d the bishop said, pointing out that people \u201cwho\u2019ve taken power\u201d in the U.S. aren\u2019t \u201cinterested in truth and justice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bishop spoke following Zelenskyy\u2019s Dec. 28 meeting with President Trump, during which a U.S.-brokered 20-point peace plan was discussed for ending Russia\u2019s bloody four-year invasion<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an OSV News interview, Bishop Szyrokoradiuk said he still had confidence in ordinary Americans, and was \u201cdeeply grateful\u201d for the help and solidarity shown to Ukrainians<\/a> in their struggle for survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, he added that he had only \u201cfaint hopes\u201d for the latest peace talks and distrusted U.S. negotiators who believed evil should be \u201csoftened rather than sanctioned.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWickedness should be punished \u2014 to ensure its perpetrators no longer steal and kill,\u201d Bishop Szyrokoradiuk<\/a> told OSV News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow can we trust people to defend us and uphold our rights when they\u2019re clearly pursuing quite different interests of their own and are ready to do business with criminals? In the end, we can only pray for their conversion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prayers and challenges amid Ukraine war<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Speaking in the evening of Dec. 28, President Trump said he believed the \u201cmaking\u201d of a \u201cdeal\u201d to end the war<\/a> were in sight, along with security guarantees for Ukraine, adding that he would talk to Russia\u2019s Vladimir Putin following his negotiations with Zelenskyy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, \u201cvery thorny issues\u201d remained, the U.S. president said, including a ceasefire and the ceding of territory in Ukraine\u2019s eastern Donbas region to Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his interview, Bishop Szyrokoradiuk said Russian attacks on Odesa<\/a>, Ukraine\u2019s third largest city, had left much of its port area in ruins, and many of its one million inhabitants without water, electricity, light and heating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that food deliveries had also been destroyed in recent missile and drone strikes, including 60 tons of cooking oil, but said local Catholic parishes, including Odesa\u2019s 19th-century Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cathedral, had their own generators and batteries, enabling local life to continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThank God we haven\u2019t been hit yet by freezing temperatures, something we still have to cope with,\u201d the bishop told OSV News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlthough at least three of our churches have been smashed, people are still coming to Mass in large numbers,\u201d he said, adding: \u201cwe pray constantly for peace<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moscow continued pounding Ukraine\u2019s cities over Christmas in an apparent bid to weaken Kyiv\u2019s negotiating position, and claimed to have captured two frontline towns, although this was not confirmed by Ukrainian commanders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a Dec. 28 Sunday homily, the patriarchal head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, said he hoped \u201cmodern creators of history\u201d would \u201cstand on the right side, protecting human life<\/a> from modern-day Herods,\u201d and called for prayers that \u201cthose making fateful decisions will be inspired by the Holy Spirit not to start wars, but to stop them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Catholic leaders denounce attacks and crimes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the head of Ukraine\u2019s independent Orthodox church, Metropolitan Epiphany (Dumenko) also compared Russia\u2019s rulers to the biblical King Herod<\/a>, who had used \u201costentatious, external religiosity\u201d to conceal a \u201crejection of God\u2019s truth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preaching Dec. 28, he said divine retribution was \u201cinevitable\u201d for those who continued abducting Ukrainian children and raping Ukrainian women, as well as for Russia\u2019s Orthodox Patriarch Kirill, who had \u201cblessed war, crimes and murders<\/a>\u201d from church pulpits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his interview, Bishop Szyrokoradiuk said he had despatched an \u201cOpen Letter to the American People\u201d Dec. 22, deploring the \u201cintense pressure\u201d exerted by U.S. government representatives on President Zelenskyy \u201cto force him to agree for a reward for the Russian aggressor,\u201d and recalling how he had \u201calways felt support from America\u201d while persecuted for his faith under Soviet rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that the letter had been read to U.S. legislators by Mercy Kaptur<\/a>, the longest-serving Congresswoman \u2014 from Ohio, and a Catholic of Ukrainian-Polish descent, and said he had since received \u201cmany messages\u201d from fellow-bishops and Ukrainian Catholics echoing his \u201ccry of the spirit\u201d and \u201cheartfelt pain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Russians are attacking Odesa to block Ukraine\u2019s access to the sea \u2014 but they are seeking to destroy the whole of our country, and we must be allowed to defend ourselves,\u201d the bishop told OSV News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUnity and solidarity in holding back the aggressor isn\u2019t just a matter for Ukraine, but for everyone who hopes to prevent the building of a new Soviet-style evil empire.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pope told journalists Dec. 23 he had felt \u201cgreat sadness\u201d that Moscow<\/a> had \u201capparently refused\u201d his request for a Christmas truce, and urged negotiating parties during his Christmas Day homily to \u201cfind courage to engage in sincere, direct and respectful dialogue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vatican News reported Dec. 27 the pontiff had dispatched three truckloads of humanitarian aid to Ukrainian regions worst affected by Russian attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bishop Szyrokoradiuk said he believed Leo XIV<\/a> understood Ukraine\u2019s plight \u201cmuch better\u201d than his predecessor, Pope Francis, adding that he counted on the U.S.-born pontiff to continue encouraging Western Catholics to offer \u201cappropriate support and prayers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
