After a shooter killed two children and injured 17 other people on Wednesday morning during Mass at a Minneapolis Catholic school, the community is reeling as leaders call for prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shooter opened fire from the parking lot through the church window during a school Mass at the Annunciation Catholic School, according to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O\u2019Hara. The local Catholic school<\/a> of almost 400 students has grades pre-K through eighth grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shooter killed an 8- and 10-year-old and injured 17 other people before killing himself. Fourteen children were injured and at least two are in critical condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeff Cavins, a Minneapolis-based Catholic author with close ties to the parish, said that in the \u201cvibrant Catholic community\u201d of the Twin Cities, everybody is affected by the tragedy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEveryone heard about it within minutes, and it\u2019s in the heart of our city,\u201d Cavins told EWTN News\u2019 Abigail Galv\u00e1n. \u201cSo what happens to one person in our Catholic community, everybody else is affected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cavins, who attended the parish for several years when he was growing up, said the parish priest has \u201ca pastor\u2019s heart and love for children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy pastor is the pastor there, Father [Dennis] Zehren, who is one of the most outstanding priests in America, truly is, and probably one of the best homilists I\u2019ve ever heard,\u201d Cavins said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnything can happen in your own backyard\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cavins, who went to school at Annunciation as a kid, said that \u201cwhat\u2019s going through my mind is the vulnerability<\/a> of these children in their first week of school.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of the children had likely just attended the state fair before the school year started, Cavins said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut also, what\u2019s going on in my mind is the responsibility of pastors and leaders in Catholic schools, and that they\u2019re vulnerable as well,\u201d Cavins said. \u201cThey\u2019re putting their lives on the line to teach children in a world that we\u2019re living in today, which, as we can see, anything can happen in your own backyard \u2014 and suddenly the world knows about it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Auxiliary Bishop Kevin Kenney said the parents are \u201cin shock.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUnbelievable that this could happen,\u201d Kenney told the local KSTP 5 News. \u201cIt\u2019s very sad for the community. It\u2019s very sad for the families that have lost loved ones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shooting<\/a> took place at Mass during the responsorial psalm, according to local priest Father Paul Hedman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was the opening school Mass, is my understanding,\u201d Kenney said. \u201cIt\u2019s a horrible, horrific way for all the students to begin the school year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police identified the shooter as a man in his early 20s. He had posted several disturbing videos with anti-religious messaging on social media on Wednesday morning before the shooting<\/a>. He reportedly had ties to the parish through his mother, who had retired from a job at the parish several years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Catholic community across the United States is uniting in prayer for the parish and local community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clergy called for prayers and mourn this painful tragedy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Soon after the shooting, Bishop Robert Barron of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester, Minnesota<\/a>, called for prayers \u201cfor all those who were injured or lost their lives \u2014 along with their families\u201d as well as \u201cfor the students, faculty, and entire parish community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Archbishop Samuel Aquila of Denver said \u201cthe pain of this tragedy is present in our hearts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt a time when young hearts were turned toward the Lord in prayer, violence entered the sanctuary, leaving wounds, fear, and deep sorrow,\u201d he said in a statement Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet us lift every child, teacher, and family of Annunciation Catholic School to the Father, especially those who have been injured, asking Christ the Divine Physician to bring healing to them<\/a>,\u201d Aquila said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe entrust the school and parish community to the maternal intercession of Our Lady of Sorrows, who stood faithfully by the cross of her Son and knows the anguish of a grieving heart,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops\u2019 vice president Archbishop William Lori<\/a> said the Church is following the tragic news with \u201cheartbreaking sadness,\u201d adding that \u201cwhenever one part of the Body of Christ is wounded, we feel the pain as if it were our very own children. Let us all beg the Lord for the protection and healing of the entire Annunciation family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pope commended the victims\u2019 souls and prays for the wounded<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On Wednesday afternoon, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin relayed to Minneapolis Archbishop Bernard Hebda a message from the Holy Father<\/a>, which reads: \u201cHis Holiness Pope Leo XIV was profoundly saddened to learn of the loss of life and injuries following the shooting that took place at Annunciation Church in Minneapolis\u201d and \u201csends his heartfelt condolences to all those affected by this terrible tragedy, especially the families now grieving the loss of a child.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile commending the souls of the deceased children to the love of Almighty God, His Holiness prays<\/a> for the wounded as well as the first responders, medical personnel, and clergy who are caring for them and their loved ones,\u201d the message added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
