{"id":5428,"date":"2025-09-17T02:02:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-17T02:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=5428"},"modified":"2025-12-31T16:27:39","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T16:27:39","slug":"dr-congos-bishops-denounce-tide-of-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/dr-congos-bishops-denounce-tide-of-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"DR Congo\u2019s Bishops Denounce Tide of Violence"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>By Joseph Pronechen, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aciafrica.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ACI Africa<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of the National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO) have denounced the new wave of deadly attacks in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), decrying what they describe as the growing trivialization of human life in the Central African nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement shared with ACI Africa on Tuesday, September 16, CENCO members highlight recent attacks and express concern about the \u201cevolution of the security situation, particularly in the eastern part of the country, which continues to suffer enormous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/02\/silent-genocide-unfolding-in-the-congo-church-sources-warn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">loss of human life<\/a> as a result of various forms of violence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn Ituri Province, on August 16, 2025, on the way to Bule Center in the Djugu Territory, rebels of the Cooperative for the Development of Congo carried out attacks against the civilian population. The toll of this attack was five people killed, four injured, and about 10 houses set on fire,\u201d they recount in their statement dated September 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CENCO members add, \u201cWhile places of worship are protected by the Constitution and laws of the Republic, Saint Kizito Propaedeutic Seminary in Bunia suffered a violent intrusion by armed men during the night of August 19 to 20, 2025.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis attack follows the assault on Blessed Anuarite Parish in Komanda, Djugu Territory, where more than 40 Catholic faithful, gathered for prayer on the night of July 26 to 27, were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/07\/massacre-in-congolese-catholic-church-leaves-43-dead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">killed <\/a>by the Allied Democratic Forces,\u201d CENCO members further recount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The deadliest incident, the Catholic Church leaders say, occurred on September 8 when at least 102 people were killed in Ntoyo village, Lubero Territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome were killed with hammers, others with bullets. In addition to the loss of human life, the armed group set fire to 16 houses, eight motorcycles, two vehicles, and looted numerous belongings of the local population,\u201d CENCO members lament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cHuman life in the DRC is being trivialized,\u201d bishops say<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Against this backdrop, they condemn the perpetrators of the atrocities, stressing that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2020\/09\/pope-to-un-respect-for-each-human-life-is-essential-for-peace-equality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">human life is sacred<\/a> and must be respected.\u201d They also offer condolences to bereaved families and commend souls of those who lost their lives to God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CENCO members call \u201cfor greater mobilization regarding the security situation prevailing in Ituri, northern North Kivu, and South Kivu.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They note that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/01\/congolese-bishop-deplores-escalation-of-violence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the massacres of Congolese people<\/a> living in these areas \u201cno longer seem to move either the nation or the international community.
