(OSV News) \u2014 As a paramilitary group announced the capture of el-Fasher, the besieged capital of Sudan\u2019s North Darfur state, Catholic Church leaders amplified calls for the protection of \u201cforgotten\u201d civilians \u2014 including thousands of children \u2014 trapped in the western Sudanese city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Oct. 26, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and its allies announced the capture of the main army base, and technically the city, after an 18-month deadly siege. The paramilitary forces had intensified bombings<\/a>, heavy artillery and drone attacks, forcing the army to retreat from the base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 260,000 civilians \u2014 including 130,000 children \u2014 remain trapped in the area\u2019s main camp for internally displaced people, enduring desperate conditions without aid, according to the United Nations and Catholic Church agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is a forgotten war because the people are really forgotten,\u201d Italian Bishop Christian Carlassare<\/a> of Bentiu in neighboring South Sudan told OSV News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUnfortunately, it\u2019s a forgotten war for the international community, but it\u2019s not forgotten for the weapon merchants, who are making a lot of profits out of this war,\u201d he cried out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an Oct. 29 appeal, the U.N.\u2019s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, best known as OCHA, warned of a dramatic escalation of violence<\/a> in and around el-Fasher, \u201ccondemning in the strongest terms reported attacks by the Rapid Support Forces against civilians, civilian infrastructure and humanitarian workers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Credible reports \u201cpoint to widespread violations, including summary executions, house-to-house raids, sexual violence, and attacks along escape routes preventing civilians from reaching safety,\u201d OCHA said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization\u2019s director general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said in an Oct. 29 X post that \u201cWHO is appalled and deeply shocked by reports of the tragic killing<\/a> of more than 460 patients and companions at Saudi Maternity Hospital\u201d in el-Fasher, following \u201crecent attacks and the abduction of health workers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Healthcare centers attacked and children starving in El-Fasher<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Prior to this latest attack, WHO has verified 185 attacks on health care in Sudan with 1,204 deaths and 416 injuries of health care workers and patients since the start of the conflict in April 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cForty-nine of these attacks occurred this year alone, killing 966 people,\u201d Ghebreyesus said in his post. \u201cAll attacks on health care MUST STOP immediately and unconditionally,\u201d he continued, and patients, health personnel and health facilities \u201cmust be protected under International Humanitarian Law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UNICEF, the U.N. children\u2019s agency, said children in el-Fasher were starving<\/a> because the agency\u2019s lifesaving nutrition services were being blocked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBlocking humanitarian access is a grave violation of children\u2019s rights and the lives of children are hanging in the balance,\u201d said Catherine Russell, UNICEF\u2019s executive director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the siege, the paramilitary forces did not allow food aid and medicines into the city and its gunmen shot dead any civilians trying to flee. Dozens died in the indiscriminate bombardment and from starvation and a cholera outbreak, while humanitarian agencies warned that the paramilitary was using starvation as a weapon in the blockade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe cannot accept what is happening in el-Fasher. While the international media are silent about Sudan, we cannot forget,\u201d said an appeal for Sudan<\/a> by the Comboni Missionaries on Oct. 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDozens of women, men and children have already lost their lives due to lack of food,\u201d the Comboni Missionaries said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Father Abdallah Hussein, vicar general of the El Obeid Diocese, which includes the Darfur region, the blockade had made it extremely difficult to reach el-Fasher or get information from the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese days, there is no communication. There is no network. I do not have information about el-Fasher<\/a>,\u201d he said when asked to give an update on the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sudan: between war and exodus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Islam is the predominant religion in Sudan, accounting for 91% of the 48 million people. Of the rest of the population, 5.4% are Christians and 2.8% follow Indigenous religions, according to the 2022 Report on International Religious Freedom by the U.S. Department of State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The current war pits the Sudan Armed Forces \u2014 the national army led by Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan \u2014 against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces under Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, known as \u201cHemedti.\u201d The war began on April 15, 2023, and since then, thousands of people have died in the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An estimated 9 million Sudanese are internally displaced<\/a>, while nearly 4 million have fled across the border to settle as refugees in the neighboring countries \u2014 including Chad, Egypt, South Sudan and the Central African Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bishop Carlassare said the fighting faction and their backers were now exploiting natural resources, especially gold, to fund the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are witnessing the exploitation of these resources to continue the conflict. They are stealing twice from the people. They are stealing peace and then the natural resources,\u201d he told OSV News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the bishop, the Church could make the Sudanese situation more and more known, especially since the people are living in misery, suffering poverty and lacking most basic services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said Bishop Yunan Tombe Trille Kuku Andali of El Obeid has been traveling around Europe in recent days, testifying on the atrocities in Sudan<\/a>, especially the tragic situation in Darfur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI hope the diplomacy of the Vatican can bring the people together, and especially to speak for those that are most abandoned,\u201d Bishop Carlassare said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Church stands for Sudan peace<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Nairobi, Father Andrew Kaufa, a member of the Montfort Missionaries, who serves as communications coordinator for the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa, or AMECEA, said the regional bishops were very concerned about the situation<\/a> in Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey have discussed how they can visit the country physically to express solidarity with the bishops and the remaining Christians. They will also continue to pray for the country and issue messages of solidarity,\u201d Father Kaufa told OSV News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, the search for peace in the country continues, with the U.S leading the peace efforts, and the Sudanese foreign minister visiting Washington for high-profile talks. The U.S. government and Egypt are also holding talks with the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, the main backers of the rival sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think there are some teammate actions for peace. \u2026 President (Donald) Trump<\/a> is trying to broker some agreement as he did for Congo and for other places,\u201d said Bishop Carlassare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bishop urged an agreement written with \u201ca pen, rather than a pencil,\u201d to solidify the intention to establish the truth and promote justice in a situation that was out of hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
