{"id":5302,"date":"2025-11-17T01:01:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-17T01:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=5302"},"modified":"2025-12-29T01:03:51","modified_gmt":"2025-12-29T01:03:51","slug":"prayer-vigils-for-immigrants-mark-mother-cabrini-feast-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/prayer-vigils-for-immigrants-mark-mother-cabrini-feast-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Prayer Vigils for Immigrants Mark Mother Cabrini Feast Day"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>By Gina Christian, Kimberley Heatherington, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osvnews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OSV News<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PHILADELPHIA (OSV News) \u2014 On the feast of the patron saint of immigrants \u2014 and a day after the U.S. Catholic bishops issued a special pastoral message on immigration \u2014 a coalition of Catholic organizations held a second wave of prayer vigils across the country Nov. 13 for what organizers called \u201ca national day of public witness for our immigrant brothers and sisters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest vigils \u2014 which took place on the feast of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/09\/the-cabrini-pledge-calls-faithful-to-be-keepers-of-hope-for-migrants-and-refugees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">St. Frances Xavier Cabrini<\/a>, an Italian immigrant whose ministry to fellow immigrants ultimately led to her canonization as the first American saint \u2014 came amid growing concern from various faith communities and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops about the impact of the Trump administration\u2019s hardline immigration policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first round of \u201cOne Church, One Family: Catholic Public Witness for Immigrants\u201d vigils took place in multiple locations around the country on Oct. 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maryknollogc.org\/action\/catholic-public-witness-for-immigrants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The grassroots initiative<\/a> was spearheaded by the Jesuits West province, with additional sponsors including Jesuit Refugee Service USA, the Ignatian Solidarity Network, <a href=\"https:\/\/maryknollogc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryknoll<\/a>, the Catholic social justice lobby Network, Pax Christi USA, the USCCB\u2019s Migration and Refugee Services and several orders of women religious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need Mother Cabrini\u2019s intercession today,\u201d said Sister Michelle Cimaroli, a member of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, speaking Nov. 13 outside of the Philadelphia field office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Catholics stand for immigrants<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Joining her at the gathering \u2014 organized by the New Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia, an immigrant advocacy nonprofit based on Catholic teaching \u2014 were dozens of clergy, religious, students and other laypeople.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants took the USCCB\u2019s \u201cCabrini Pledge,\u201d named for the saint, and serving as \u201ca reminder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/10\/bishop-seitz-shares-migrants-stories-with-pope\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">our immigrant<\/a> heritage and a call to deeper engagement with our faith in response to current events.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attendees also listened to a public reading of the full text of the USCCB\u2019s Nov. 12 special pastoral message on immigration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement did not name President Donald Trump, but it came as a growing number of bishops have acknowledged that some of the Trump administration\u2019s immigration policies risk presenting the Church with both practical challenges in administering pastoral support and charitable endeavors, as well as religious liberty challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe oppose the indiscriminate mass deportation of people. We pray for an end to dehumanizing rhetoric and violence, whether directed at immigrants or at law enforcement,\u201d the bishops\u2019 statement said, adding, \u201cCatholic teaching exhorts nations to recognize the fundamental dignity of all persons, including immigrants. We bishops advocate for a meaningful reform of our nation\u2019s immigration laws and procedures. Human dignity and national security are not in conflict. Both are possible if people of good will work together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the bishops\u2019 plenary assembly, the message was approved by all but a handful of voting bishops and was met with a standing ovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The message \u2014 a late addition to the agenda for the conference\u2019s annual fall meeting, which took place in Baltimore Nov. 10-13 \u2014 cited concerns over the rollback of a policy that prohibited immigration enforcement in sensitive locations, such as churches, schools and hospitals, as well as \u201cindiscriminate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/10\/cardinal-mcelroy-calls-for-solidarity-with-migrants-lacking-legal-status\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mass deportation<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bishops also urged \u201cmeaningful reform\u201d of U.S. immigration laws and procedures in order to balance \u201chuman dignity and national security,\u201d as Catholic teaching specifies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After hearing the bishops\u2019 message, participants walked in a silent Eucharistic procession around the block on which the Philadelphia ICE facility is located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/07\/ice-presence-casts-shadow-over-national-eucharistic-pilgrimage-in-la\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the procession<\/a> and its concluding Benediction was Father G. Dennis Gill, rector of the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul, and director of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia\u2019s Office for Divine Worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prayer vigils in front of ICE facilities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Father Gill \u2014 who lifted the monstrance over the crowds on the sidewalk and over the ICE facility \u2014 told OSV News it was \u201cvery important that the Eucharist was here today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJesus gives us the invitation, rather the command, whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, you do unto me. The Eucharist brings that Gospel message into the flesh,\u201d he explained. \u201cThe Lord was here for all those outside, all those inside, giving us the possibility of knowing his saving and redeeming love in his holy body and blood. And so it was important that everyone be blessed, inside and outside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Washington, eight Catholic organizations, their supporters, and concerned citizens gathered for a nonviolent \u201cPrayer Vigil in Support of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/10\/chicago-catholics-denounce-ice-tactics-against-immigrants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Our Immigrant Community<\/a>\u201d in front of ICE headquarters in that city\u2019s southwest section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants were universally pleased that the USCCB had released its Nov. 12 immigration statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a church community, we always appreciate those who are in leadership taking a position; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/06\/san-diego-clergy-make-impact-in-immigration-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">taking a clear stand<\/a>,\u201d said Judy Coode, communications director of Pax Christi USA. \u201cThis is obviously an important, serious pastoral issue that we know these men have been grappling with \u2014 and we look forward to more concrete guidance and direction for our church community to work together to care for our immigrant brothers and sisters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Faith in action: defending immigrants<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/10\/catholic-vigils-for-immigrants-take-place-across-the-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The prayer service<\/a> included Scripture readings; a litany in which the crowd responded to invocations with, \u201cJesus, move us to action\u201d; an excerpt from a homily of St. Oscar Romero, given the day before his assassination; and an excerpt from Pope Leo\u2019s message concerning the 111th World Day of Migrants and Refugees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A \u201cspecial moral appeal\u201d was made \u201cto political and immigration officials and agents who have devised, ordered and are carrying out ICE raids on immigrant communities across the U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As it concluded, the crowd of about 75 shouted, \u201cStop the raids of immigrants! Stop the repression! Release all those held captive and reunite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/04\/10-million-christians-in-us-at-risk-of-mass-deportation-report-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">families that have been separated<\/a>!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michele Dunne, executive director of the Franciscan Action Network, said she felt the witness of St. Frances Cabrini still speaks to contemporary immigration issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSt. Frances Cabrini is a wonderful example of the role immigrants have played in the history of the United States, the building of the United States, and the important task of welcoming people from all over the world who come to the United States to build good lives and to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/04\/bishop-seitz-migrants-can-help-build-us-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">part of this society<\/a>,\u201d Dunne said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Featured image: A woman who attended the prayer vigil and Eucharistic procession for immigrants held on November 13, 2025, in front of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Philadelphia Field Office holds an image of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, universal patroness of immigrants, whose feast day was chosen to commemorate the occasion.
