(OSV News) \u2014 In a sign of closeness as Christmas approaches, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin patriarch of Jerusalem, accompanied by the Latin Patriarchal Vicar Bishop William Shomali and a small delegation, arrived in Gaza Dec. 19 for a pastoral visit to the Holy Family Parish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his visit, he planned to \u201creview the current situation of the parish, including the humanitarian response, ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts, and the prospects for the period ahead,\u201d the Latin Patriarchate<\/a> said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeting with the local clergy \u2014 led by steadfast pastor Argentine Father Gabriel Romanelli<\/a> \u2014 and parishioners, he went there to \u201creceive briefings on the needs of the community and the initiatives underway to support them,\u201d the patriarchate said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A message of hope and solidarity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Greeting parishioners who have sheltered in the premises of Holy Family since the start of the war in October 2023, Cardinal Pizzaballa said, \u201cFirst of all, I greet all of you, happy to be once again among all of you,\u201d adding that for the first time since the start of the war he felt \u201ca little bit of relief.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know the situation is difficult<\/a>,\u201d he said, but emphasized that he brings the greetings not just from Jerusalem, \u201cbut from all over the world \u2026 you cannot imagine how many churches, how many groups, associations, people from all over the world \u2014 are united with you at this moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the Holy Family community showed during the war \u201cwhat does it mean to remain \u2026 strong in faith during this terrible period.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe cannot forget what happened \u2026 but now we have to look forward,\u201d the patriarch said, promising the community: \u201cWe will rebuild. We will rebuild our schools<\/a>. We (will) rebuild our houses \u2026 our life. We are rooted here and we remain here. We want to be here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said: \u201cEvery time I come here also during the war, there is one baptism to do. So there is no Christmas without baptism. It is wonderful, the best way to say that we believe in life and Jesus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday, Dec. 21, Cardinal Pizzaballa presided over the Christmas Mass at the Holy Family Parish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis visit marks the beginning of the Christmas<\/a> celebrations among a community that has lived and continues to live through dark and challenging times,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the ceasefire\u2019s first phase agreement to end hostilities, Israel has continued targeted attacks in Gaza, including the recent killing of a Hamas senior commander. According to Al-Jazeera, Israel has carried out at least 800 attacks and killed 400 people since the ceasefire began Oct. 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a recent update, Ramiz Alakbarov, the United Nations\u2019 Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, warned that despite U.N. efforts to distribute tents, blankets and provisions for the cold winter months ahead, continued restrictions on humanitarian corridors<\/a> are hampering those efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dec. 19-21 visit of the patriarch \u201creaffirms the enduring bond of the Holy Family Parish in Gaza with the wider Diocese of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, and expresses the Patriarchate\u2019s commitment to accompany its faithful in hope, solidarity, and prayer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMay the birth of Jesus<\/a> bring the new birth in our life,\u201d the patriarch said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
