{"id":5029,"date":"2025-12-03T07:04:55","date_gmt":"2025-12-03T07:04:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=5029"},"modified":"2025-12-26T21:11:09","modified_gmt":"2025-12-26T21:11:09","slug":"situation-in-gaza-remains-critical-catholic-leaders-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/situation-in-gaza-remains-critical-catholic-leaders-say\/","title":{"rendered":"Situation in Gaza Remains \u2018Critical,\u2019 Catholic Leaders Say"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>By Gina Christian, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osvnews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OSV News<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(OSV News) \u2014 As Pope Leo XIV urged in Turkey last week that \u201cthe future of humanity is at stake\u201d with ongoing conflict in the Middle East and days after a United Nations Security Council endorsement of a U.S.-backed peace plan, Catholic leaders warn that conditions in Gaza remain grave, especially as winter approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe situation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/10\/hostages-freed-and-ceasefire-brings-relief-but-peace-in-gaza-seen-as-fragile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">continues to be critical<\/a>,\u201d said Joseph Hazboun, regional director for the Catholic Near East Welfare Association-Pontifical Mission\u2019s Jerusalem office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a message to OSV News, Hazboun said his agency\u2019s ongoing efforts to provide shelter, food, psychosocial support and other necessities have been hampered by Israel\u2019s \u201ccontinued siege and blockade on Gaza \u2026 hardly allowing serious relief efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hazboun\u2019s assessment echoed that of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/08\/jerusalem-cardinal-interreligious-dialogue-currently-in-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa<\/a>, Latin patriarch of Jerusalem, who in a Nov. 19 interview with Vatican News said that \u201ceverything remains to be done\u201d in restoring daily life in Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe only difference \u2014 thanks be to God and to those who secured it \u2014 is the end of the blanket bombing,\u201d Cardinal Pizzaballa told Vatican News, adding that while \u201caid is entering more regularly than before, and more reliably,\u201d the supplies are \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/en\/world\/news\/2025-12\/shortage-of-supplies-blights-daily-life-in-gaza.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">still far from sufficient<\/a> given the needs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere isn\u2019t much that we can do,\u201d Hazboun admitted. \u201cWe provided a limited number of tents, but are unable to provide more, although there is a need, but tents are not available.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, he said, \u201cyou can imagine that they are not very useful when the streets flood because of the rain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flooding remains a \u201cmajor risk\u201d in Gaza\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Flooding from heavy rainfall has swept <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/08\/caritas-calls-man-made-famine-and-assault-on-gaza-city-a-horror\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">through Gaza<\/a> in recent days, destroying tents, bedding, clothing and other essential items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>United Nations aid management workers in Gaza reported that flooding \u201cremains a major risk,\u201d the agency said in a Dec. 1 news update. Sandbags are in use at 41 displacement sites, said the U.N., with paid teams \u201creinforcing drainage\u201d and collecting \u201cempty flour sacks to improve insulation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The World Bank noted in 2023 that rainfall events in Gaza \u201chave become more violent\u201d in recent decades, causing flash floods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWater is needed \u2014 of course \u2014 but in Gaza \u2018water\u2019 often means mud in an already dire situation,\u201d Cardinal Pizzaballa told Vatican News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hazboun said his team was also working to bolster medical services in Gaza, providing the Near East Council of Churches \u2014 an ecumenical and interfaith organization \u2014 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/05\/popemobile-to-be-transformed-into-mobile-clinic-for-gaza-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with equipment<\/a> and tools for their main lab, so that they can resume their medical services.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, Hazboun said his office has awarded \u201ca special grant to the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital to treat war-affected burn victims.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.N. said that as of Nov. 30, 224 out of 592 \u201cfunctional health service points\u201d in Gaza were now operational, including 19 out of 36 hospitals \u2014 but of that 224, only 215 are \u201cpartially functional,\u201d with just eight fully online. The slight increase in health service restoration includes the \u201cgradual reestablishment\u201d of a seven-bed pediatric intensive care unit at Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, said the agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hazboun said his agency is distributing hygiene kits, material for which is \u201cexpensive and unaffordable by the local communities,\u201d while coordinating with on-the-ground partners to offer food parcels and psychosocial support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With \u201cthe blockade \u2026 expected to continue,\u201d Hazboun and his team are also looking \u201cto consult with the youth for creative solutions to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/11\/pope-calls-for-investigation-of-possible-genocide-in-gaza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ongoing crisis<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Killings have not stopped, despite the ceasefire<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Israel-Hamas war \u2014 which began on Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas militants attacked Israel, killing some 1,200 Israelis and abducting 251 hostages \u2014 has seen Gaza heavily damaged, leaving \u201ca lot of debris,\u201d said Hazboun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the rubble is also \u201crecyclable material,\u201d he said, adding that the region\u2019s youth might \u201ccome up with creative concepts to help with water desalination, alternative energy, cooking gas, maybe even alternative solutions for the tents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added, \u201cBesides these very limited interventions, we continue to pray for an end to the war and the killing of people that has never stopped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/10\/cardinal-welcomes-gaza-ceasefire-talks-urges-perseverance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">since the ceasefire<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 70,000 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the war, according to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Catholic leaders have expressed grave concern for the region\u2019s Christian communities, which have themselves come under attack in Gaza and in the West Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Holy Family, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/07\/two-dead-holy-family-gaza-pastor-injured-after-mid-morning-israeli-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gaza\u2019s only Catholic parish<\/a>, was struck in July by what Israel Defense Forces said was an errant mortar round. Three elderly persons were confirmed dead and more than 10 wounded. The church\u2019s pastor, Father Gabriel Romanelli, sustained a leg injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In December 2023, a woman named Nahida and her adult daughter Samar were killed by Israeli firepower at Holy Family as they walked to the convent. In a statement at the time, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem said they had been shot \u201cin cold blood,\u201d with \u201cone \u2026 killed as she tried to carry the other to safety.\u201d Seven others were wounded in that attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In November, Hazboun reported that only 596 people, or 207 Christian families remain in Gaza, with 382 people \u2014 136 families \u2014 sheltering at the Holy Family Church, and 214 people, or 71 families, sheltering at St. Porphyrios Greek Orthodox Church, which was struck in both 2023 and 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Threats to Christians in Gaza and the West Bank worsening<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In his Vatican News interview, Cardinal Pizzaballa highlighted attacks on Christian villages such as Taybeh, located in the West Bank, pointing to \u201chomes and cars vandalized, windows smashed, tires slashed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The situation \u201cis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/08\/conflict-in-gaza-12000-children-suffer-from-acute-malnutrition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">worsening every day<\/a>,\u201d said the cardinal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hazboun said his office is \u201cfinalizing a survey on the Christian community, to get as much data as possible on their current status, who will remain in Gaza and who plans to leave upon opening of the Rafah crossing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The data will also assess housing needs for those planning to remain in Gaza, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking Dec. 2 after Mass in Beirut amid his apostolic journey to Turkey and Lebanon, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/09\/use-wealth-for-peace-not-war-says-the-pope\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pope Leo<\/a> said that \u201cnew approaches\u201d were needed in the Middle East \u201cto reject the mindset of revenge and violence, to overcome political, social and religious divisions, and to open new chapters in the name of reconciliation and peace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need to change course.
