{"id":4906,"date":"2025-12-01T23:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-01T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=4906"},"modified":"2025-12-31T14:27:42","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T14:27:42","slug":"from-the-editor-winter-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/from-the-editor-winter-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"From the Editor: Winter 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Immigration \u2014 and what is happening right now to immigrants in our country \u2014 is something we simply cannot be silent about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We received various letters and comments on my interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/09\/false-narratives-of-immigration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bishop Mark J. Seitz of El Paso<\/a>, Texas, in our Fall issue of <em>Maryknoll<\/em>, and some of them, both pro and con, are printed in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/12\/readers-responses-winter-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Readers\u2019 Responses.<\/a> Immigration is an important issue for the Catholic Church, particularly in this country that was founded by and built up by immigrants. Since its early days, the Maryknoll movement has ministered to refugees and displaced people, and to this day Maryknoll missioners serve migrants here and abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We return to that topic in this issue with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/photo_meditations\/standing-her-ground\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">photo meditation<\/a> by Father Joseph Vereroso on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/09\/spirit-of-mission-healing-from-the-sacred-heart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mother Cabrini<\/a>, the patron saint of immigrants. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/12\/the-darkness-of-this-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">moving reflection<\/a>, Sister Catherine DeVito, who serves in Florida\u2019s farmworker country, writes of the trauma being inflicted on the children of migrant families by our government\u2019s indiscriminate and frighteningly cruel campaign of mass deportations. In another article, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/12\/god-present-in-my-journey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deacon Leonel Yoque<\/a> tells us the inspiring story of his journey: from Guatemala as an undocumented migrant fleeing his country\u2019s political violence, to becoming a permanent deacon who leads Maryknoll immersion trips to his country of origin that help participants better understand its realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often, those who show compassion for migrants are accused to advocating \u201copen borders.\u201d Having compassion for those in need and those who are suffering is not a political position; it is taking Jesus\u2019 words literally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><em>Lynn F.
