(OSV News) \u2014 Despite daunting odds, Catholic Relief Services<\/a> and its on-the-ground partners have managed to deliver aid to 1.7 million people in Gaza since 2023, according to new data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On July 29, CRS \u2014 the official relief and development agency of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops \u2014 updated its diocesan coordinators regarding efforts to provide essential assistance to the population of Gaza<\/a>, where CRS has maintained a continuous presence since 1984.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amid \u201csevere access limitations and aid blockades,\u201d Baltimore-based CRS and its partners have still managed to supply basic needs as well as psychosocial support, wrote CRS diocesan engagement adviser Jes\u00fas J. Huerta in his email, with the agency \u201cmobilizing supplies from Egypt and Jordan\u201d following \u201cthe recent humanitarian pause.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israel enacted an 11-week blockade of aid starting in March, in an effort to pressure Hamas to release the remaining Israeli hostages taken<\/a> in Hamas\u2019 Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which sparked the current war. In late May, aid distribution was resumed under the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a joint initiative of the U.S. and Israel. GHF has drawn international criticism for security concerns surrounding its distribution points, which have been reported to result in numerous fatalities<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israel has also initiated aid drops into Gaza, but humanitarian groups have described them as dangerous and inefficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Huerta said in his email that \u201cdecades of work with communities, the local Catholic Church and partners in Gaza and the region have enabled our (CRS\u2019) rapid, flexible and impactful response.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same, he noted that \u201cour staff and partners continue to operate under grave risk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Death and hunger in a wave of violence that shows no sign of stopping<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of the Israel-Hamas War, more than 60,000 Palestinians have died<\/a>, according to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry. Some 1,200 Israelis have been killed and more than 5,400 injured. Of the 251 Israeli hostages taken by Hamas that Oct. 7, 50 remain in captivity, with only 20 of them believed to still be alive, with 83 of the hostages confirmed killed to date. More than 100 were released later in 2023; eight were rescued by Israeli forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, or IPC \u2014 a measurement initiative by a global consortium of food security organizations and agencies, including CRS \u2014 has warned that Gaza is at risk of famine<\/a>, with both serious and critical levels of acute malnutrition throughout the densely populated region. \u201cIncreasingly stringent blockades\u201d by Israel have \u201cdramatically worsened\u201d conditions, said the IPC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a fact sheet attached to Huerta\u2019s email, CRS said that its current program priorities are safe, dignified shelter and housing; water, sanitation and hygiene; psychosocial support; and assisting church partners in Gaza, \u201cwho enjoy community trust and have strong grassroots connections.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noting that its Gaza church partners \u201cserve as temporary shelters for approximately 400 people,\u201d CRS said it has supplied \u201chygiene items, cash assistance, clothing, tarps and other humanitarian goods<\/a> as available.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the aid CRS has so far provided since 2023:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Shelter assistance (including bedding, living supplies, tarps, tents and shelter repair kits) to 341,790 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Clean water, latrines, hygiene and sanitation kits and supplies to 500,268 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Psychosocial support to 10,399 children and teens, and to 1,333 caregivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A food system collapsed by the blockade and other causes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Linked to the fact sheet was a new report produced by CRS and two global humanitarian organizations, Save the Children<\/a> and Mercy Corps<\/a>, titled \u201cMarkets Under Fire,\u201d which assessed market conditions in Gaza and their impact on food security and humanitarian aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Led by Save the Children, the July 2025 report marks the second phase in an analysis first undertaken by the three agencies \u2014 which are \u201cthree of the main cash actors in Gaza,\u201d the report notes \u2014 in August and September of 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest report found that \u201cabout 70% of structures\u201d in Gaza are damaged<\/a>, and \u201ckey urban areas are largely non-functional.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 86% of Gaza is within the \u201cIsraeli-militarized zone,\u201d which has made \u201ckey market hubs inaccessible,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, 83% of cropland and 95% of farmland \u2014 the latter of which encompasses broader uses, such as livestock grazing \u2014 have been rendered \u201cdamaged or inaccessible,\u201d said the report. Agricultural production has plummeted by more than 80%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Livestock numbers have declined, with owners forced to kill their flocks due to the cost of fodder, the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, \u201cthe food system has collapsed due to blockade, destruction of productive assets, and looting,\u201d said the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The data showed that as of June 2025, \u201cfood consumption, dietary diversity, and (food) access have all sharply deteriorated,\u201d with 79% of households having \u201cpoor food consumption scores<\/a>,\u201d and 98% resorting to \u201cextreme coping strategies like meal skipping and portion reduction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, \u201csome staples have risen over 3,000% in price,\u201d said the report, adding that \u201chouseholds continue to depend on markets but face severe supply shortages and unaffordable prices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skyrocketing inflation contrasts with low purchasing power<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Exponential inflation in Gaza extends to durable goods as well, with a single vehicle tire costing \u201cup to $17,000,\u201d the report found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Economically, Gaza continues to experience a \u201cmulti-faceted liquidity crisis,\u201d including \u201cdiminished purchasing power among consumers, a shortage of usable physical currency, and severe capital constraints limiting suppliers\u2019 ability to restock,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, humanitarian organizations<\/a> \u201cincreasingly use e-wallets and mobile transfers for cash assistance,\u201d but such strategies are \u201conly partial solutions due to Gaza\u2019s cash-based economy, recurrent power and network outages, and the enforced isolation of its financial system,\u201d said the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response, \u201ccitizen-led price monitoring platforms and informal practices like bartering and peer-to-peer exchanges\u201d have emerged, while formal market regulation \u201chas collapsed under blockade<\/a> and conflict,\u201d leading to \u201csevere inflation \u2026 price fluctuations, and reduced competition,\u201d the report found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis environment exacerbates inequality and undermines market integrity,\u201d said the report. \u201cThe absence of security<\/a>, law and order and predictable access fragments the market, fuels speculation and leaves space for price manipulation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Energy access in Gaza \u201chas collapsed,\u201d with the grid down and insufficient fuel entry into the region between March and June, leaving residents to \u201crely on unreliable and hazardous alternatives\u201d such as \u201ccar batteries, firewood, solar panel and burning plastic,\u201d said the report. Most households have less than four hours of electricity per day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amid difficult conditions, CRS and its partners remain steadfast<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Formal transport and communication systems have been undermined, with public transport now \u201cnearly non-existent\u201d and relying on donkey carts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet the scope of such challenges has not deterred CRS<\/a> or its partners, the agency said in its fact sheet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn a time of fear and flight, CRS works with its partners to uphold human dignity, even amid bombardment and continuous displacement,\u201d said the agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
