{"id":4574,"date":"2025-09-23T17:45:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T17:45:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=4574"},"modified":"2025-12-31T16:26:37","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T16:26:37","slug":"the-cabrini-pledge-calls-faithful-to-be-keepers-of-hope-for-migrants-and-refugees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/the-cabrini-pledge-calls-faithful-to-be-keepers-of-hope-for-migrants-and-refugees\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018The Cabrini Pledge\u2019 Calls Faithful to be Keepers of Hope for Migrants and Refugees"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>By Marietha G\u00f3ngora V., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osvnews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OSV News<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(OSV News) \u2014 At the start of National Migration Week, taking place this year Sept. 22-28, the chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops\u2019 Committee on Migration invited the faithful to join \u201cThe Cabrini Pledge\u201d and be guardians of hope for migrants and refugees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Named after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/09\/spirit-of-mission-healing-from-the-sacred-heart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">St. Frances Xavier Cabrini<\/a>, patron saint of immigrants and the first U.S. citizen to be canonized, the pledge was launched \u201cas a reminder of our Church and nation\u2019s immigrant heritage and a call to deeper engagement with our faith in response to current events,\u201d according to a webpage explaining this initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bkQMdVSdhYY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">video message, Bishop Mark J. Seitz<\/a> of El Paso, Texas, recalled that \u201cduring her life of service, Mother Cabrini often faced great trials as an immigrant, a woman, and an advocate for the poor, but she never relented in her determination to build an empire of hope, sustained by her relationship with Christ in the Eucharist and in the face of those she served.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An Italian immigrant who adopted this country as her own, Mother Cabrini also faced \u201cdiscrimination and seemingly impossible odds, (yet) she never succumbed to hopelessness. With relentless faith, she accompanied her fellow immigrants and others living on the margins of society with a great missionary zeal,\u201d the pledge\u2019s webpage reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/en\/saints\/12\/22\/st--francesca-saverio-cabrini--virgin--foundress-of-the--mission.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mother Cabrini\u2019s<\/a> challenges, and the challenges of those she served, are not unique among the generations of Catholics and immigrants in general who have come to this land,\u201d said the initiative, and her witness can help in the \u201cpresent reality in the life of our Church and nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A call to listen to the realities that migrants face<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Launched in English and Spanish, the pledge-signing initiative\u2019s call to be guardians of hope also resonates with Pope Leo XIV\u2019s message for World Migrant and Refugee Day, in which he said that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/09\/migrants-are-not-enemies-just-brothers-and-sisters-in-need-pope-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">migrants and refugees<\/a> remind the Church of her pilgrim dimension, perpetually journeying towards her final homeland, sustained by a hope that is a theological virtue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to offering resources \u2014 including USCCB documents on Catholic social teaching, prayers, and information about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/09\/false-narratives-of-immigration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">migration<\/a> policies \u2014 the actions the pledge invites people to take include \u201cto affirm, in word and deed, the inherent dignity of every person, regardless of immigration status or country of origin, seeing each as a child of God before all else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pledge also invites people to make a commitment to fraternal encounter, civic dialogue, and prayer for all those who are searching for a new home, as well as to listen to the realities of migrants and refugees and the circumstances they face and to consider how they are called to \u201creflect the love and hope of Christ to others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The week prior, the USCCB reiterated its longstanding efforts to show solidarity with immigrants \u201camid the fear and anxiety prompted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/03\/hundreds-join-el-paso-bishops-protest-against-mass-deportation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">current immigration enforcement efforts<\/a>.\u201d In a Sept. 28 statement, the bishops also said that \u201cNational Migration Week invites Catholics across the country to reflect on how hope can shape and inform our collective response to migration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his video about \u201cThe Cabrini Pledge,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/04\/bishop-seitz-migrants-can-help-build-us-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bishop Seitz<\/a> invited people to \u201cmake an intentional commitment to living out the Gospel not in abstraction but through acts of solidarity that affirm the human dignity of every person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThrough prayer, encounter, and civic engagement, we can transform fear into compassion and create a world where no one feels less than human because of their immigration status,\u201d Bishop Seitz said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Featured image: Bishop Mark J.
