VATICAN CITY (CNS) \u2014 The joy of Christ\u2019s resurrection can repair the widespread sadness and malaise in today\u2019s world, Pope Leo XIV said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOn the paths of the heart, the Risen One walks with us and for us,\u201d the pope<\/a> said Oct. 22 during his weekly general audience in St. Peter\u2019s Square.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is the Risen One who radically changes our perspective, instilling hope that fills the void of sadness,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greeting Polish-speaking visitors during the audience, the pope highlighted that Oct. 22 marked the feast of St. John Paul II, the date of his inaugural Mass in 1978, during which he proclaimed, \u201cDo not be afraid! Open wide the doors to Christ<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cExactly 47 years ago, in this square, he urged the world to open itself to Christ,\u201d Pope Leo said. \u201cThis appeal is still valid today: We are all called to make it our own.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The month of October is dedicated to the rosary, he told French-speakers, and to prayer, reflection and action in support of its missionary work, he added in Italian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All Catholics are invited \u201cto renew our active cooperation in the mission of the church,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith the power of prayer, the potential of married life and the fresh energy of youth, may you be missionaries of the Gospel, offering your concrete support to those who dedicate their lives to the evangelization of peoples,\u201d he told young people and newlyweds who had come to the audience in their wedding attire to receive a blessing from him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sadness \u2018robs life of meaning\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, in his ongoing series of audience talks on the Jubilee theme, \u201cJesus Christ our Hope,\u201d Pope Leo reflected on how Christ\u2019s resurrection \u201ccan heal one of the malaises of our time: sadness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIntrusive and widespread, sadness accompanies the days of many people,\u201d he said in his main address in Italian. \u201cSadness robs life of meaning and vigor, turning it into a directionless and meaningless journey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A similar scenario can be seen in the Gospel of Luke\u2019s account of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, he said. \u201cDisappointed and discouraged, they leave Jerusalem, leaving behind the hopes they held in Jesus, who has been crucified and entombed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, they met a stranger along the road who listened to them, \u201callowing them to unburden their disappointment,\u201d the pope said. A bit of hope is rekindled in their hearts when the stranger rebukes them for being slow to believe everything that the prophets have declared, \u201cthat Christ had to suffer, die and rise again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is only after they sit down and break bread with the \u201cmysterious traveling companion\u201d that the two disciples recognize him as Jesus<\/a>, and he immediately disappears from their view, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resurrection of Christ fills the \u2018void of sadness\u2019\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEverything becomes clear: the shared journey<\/a>, the tender and powerful word, the light of truth,\u201d Pope Leo said. \u201cImmediately, joy is rekindled, energy flows back into their weary limbs, and gratitude returns to their memory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their souls are filled \u201cwith an unexpected and joyful realization: Christ is truly risen!\u201d he said in English. \u201cThe Lord wishes to do the same for us, by dispelling any sadness and desperation that we may be feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Lord has truly been raised,\u201d in deeds, not words, \u201cwith his body bearing the marks of his passion, a perennial seal of his love for us,\u201d the pope said in Italian. \u201cThe victory of life is not an empty word, but a real, tangible fact.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMay the unexpected joy of the disciples of Emmaus be a gentle reminder to us when the going gets tough,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is the Risen One who radically changes our perspective, instilling hope that fills the void of sadness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the darkness of his passion, \u201che bears witness to the defeat of death and affirms the victory of life,\u201d he said. \u201cHistory still has much goodness to hope for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo recognize the Resurrection means to change one\u2019s outlook on the world: to return to the light<\/a> to recognize the truth that has saved us, and that saves us,\u201d he said. Jesus alone \u201cmakes the impossible possible!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
