{"id":4496,"date":"2025-05-08T15:49:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-08T15:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=4496"},"modified":"2025-12-31T16:34:55","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T16:34:55","slug":"to-smell-like-the-sheep-a-maryknoll-reflection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/to-smell-like-the-sheep-a-maryknoll-reflection\/","title":{"rendered":"To Smell like the Sheep: A Maryknoll Reflection"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>By Antoinette (Nonie) Gutzler, M.M.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maryknollogc.org\/resources\/fourth-sunday-of-easter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">May 11, 2025<\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/051125.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Acts 13:14, 43-52 | Rv 7:9, 14b-17 | Jn 10:27-30<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the memory of Pope Francis lingers in our hearts, the words of today\u2019s Gospel from St. John, \u201cMy sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me,\u201d capture well the meaning of Francis\u2019 life and papacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The crowds lining up to pay their respects to Pope Francis in St. Peter\u2019s Basilica gave witness to the reality that his voice was heard and recognized by migrants, refugees, prisoners, the poor and all those marginalized by Church and society. For the past 12 years, crowds came to see him, and perhaps held the hope that his hand would reach out to give a blessing. They came to him not only in the recognition of his voice but, as he admonished his priests, because he had the \u201csmell of the sheep\u201d that made him leader, \u201cone of the flock,\u201d and worthy of trust. (Photo courtesy of Dee Smith\/Guatemala)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This recognition renders this Gospel as most fitting for today\u2019s celebration of Mother\u2019s Day. We tend to think of only men as shepherds, but our Scriptures give witness to women who were shepherds and whose voice called to their sheep and who had their \u201csmell.\u201d On this day, we may ask: who and where are our shepherds today \u2013 those calling new life to come forth with courage and support, in the midst of daily struggles and suffering?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We find them in the courage of Maryknoll Lay Missioners such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/author\/hcerneka\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Heidi Cerneka<\/a>, who traveled with a fact-finding group to the Dari\u00e9n Gap on the Colombia-Panama border to assess the dangers of the migrants fleeing to find a better life. And again in the ministry of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2023\/09\/really-living-the-gospel-dee-dungy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dee Dungy<\/a> as she accompanies the women refugees in Kenya\u2019s Kakuma Refugee Camp, sharing their stories and bonding as shepherds to one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The voice of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2023\/12\/they-call-her-foreign-grandmother\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sister Hyun Jung Kim<\/a> is heard in East Timor, where she has been given the designation \u2018Foreign Grandmother\u2019 as she travels the roads \u201cseeing\u201d the needs of the people in the villages and bringing healing strength. And in Guatemala, Sister Dee Smith, in the spirit of Isaiah, \u201clike a shepherd \u2026 feeds her flock and gathers them all in her arms carrying them close to her heart\u201d as she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/02\/sisters-in-mission-alarmed-by-gutting-of-us-foreign-aid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cries in distress over lack of funding<\/a> for the medicine needed for those she ministers to and cares for with HIV\/AIDS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This Sunday, we are called to hear the voice of Jesus and to have the \u201csmell of the sheep\u201d \u2014 a daunting and most necessary calling. Of course, it requires courage. But, as Sister Dee reflects: \u201cIn the heart of it, in the darkness, we have to be light. So I would like to encourage all of us to remember: When confronting darkness, do not forget the power of the light that we hold.\u201d And the light we hold is the powerful and moving relationship between sheep and shepherd, as the shepherd\u2019s voice is heard bringing comfort, inclusion and belonging to all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollsisters.org\/sisters\/sister-antoinette-nonie-gutzler\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sister Antoinette \u201cNonie\u201d Gutzler<\/a>, of Brooklyn, New York, joined the Maryknoll Sisters in 1964. She has served on assignments to Tanzania, Taiwan and the United States, where she served as president of the Maryknoll Sisters from 2015 to 2021.
