{"id":4436,"date":"2025-09-18T15:17:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-18T15:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=4436"},"modified":"2025-12-31T16:27:05","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T16:27:05","slug":"the-poor-will-be-exalted-a-maryknoll-reflection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/the-poor-will-be-exalted-a-maryknoll-reflection\/","title":{"rendered":"The Poor Will Be Exalted: A Maryknoll Reflection"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>By <a href=\"https:\/\/mklm.org\/our-people\/missioners\/profile-gabe-hurrish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gabe Hurrish<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maryknollogc.org\/resources\/twenty-fifth-sunday-in-ordinary-time-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time<\/a><br>September 21, 2025<br><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/092125.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amos 8:4-7<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/092125.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 Timothy 2:1-8<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/092125.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Luke 16:1-13<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s Sunday readings struck me right in the face. I live in <a href=\"https:\/\/mklm.org\/south-sudan\/life-in-south-sudan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South Sudan<\/a> where almost everything written in the readings resonates with the current struggles of the people. The leaders of this extremely poor East African country have seemingly forgotten about the needs of the nearly 12 million people suffering the effects of ongoing violent conflict and climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Money dominates almost all aspects of life in South Sudan. I have witnessed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/03\/south-sudans-people-suffer-a-heavy-burden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the cruelty perpetuated upon an innocent people<\/a> so that a few may live in overabundance and luxury. I have listened to the sweet words of politicians who say one thing and do another. Greed and selfishness rule too many lives. Jesus doesn\u2019t teach that this is the way Christians should act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Praise the Lord who lifts up the poor. No one else will do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In today\u2019s Gospel reading of the Parable of the Unjust Steward, I am reminded of a quote from the musical <em>Fiddler On the Roof<\/em> when Tevye says, \u201cDear God, you made many, many poor people. I realize, of course, that it\u2019s no shame to be poor. But it\u2019s no great honor either!\u201d Similarly, in today\u2019s Gospel reading, when describing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/07\/a-maryknoll-reflection-greed-is-not-the-path\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the actions of the steward<\/a> as he faces losing his position due to his dishonesty, Jesus points out the ingenuity and cleverness of the corrupt steward, not his worldly idolatry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus teaches us that just as this unjust steward is willing to go to extreme lengths to save his livelihood, Christians should show such inspiration when defending the Gospel \u2014 in small matters as well as great ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God\u2019s promise is that, in the end, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/02\/blessed-are-the-poor-a-maryknoll-reflection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">God will raise the poor<\/a> from the dust and exalt them on thrones. I think most people just have a small issue with the timing. Why do we have to wait? Couldn\u2019t it happen now? It seems God has forgotten those who continue to suffer in this world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saint Paul got it right. We should be faith-filled followers of Jesus who simply pray. We pray for everyone, everywhere, all the time. We don\u2019t question or judge. This is not easy. God places <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2022\/08\/faith-in-suffering-a-maryknoll-reflection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">many challenges before us<\/a>. I see how clever and manipulative the rulers of the world are. They know how to work the system to their advantage. Their hearts do not seem to soften from the suffering of those around them. I pray for such people who are astute in the world but know nothing of heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gospel Acclamation, which is read just before the Gospel, goes to my heart. It says Jesus gave up riches to be poor for us so that we will be rich. I too have given up riches to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2023\/03\/transfiguration-simple-lifestyles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">live a simple lifestyle<\/a> among some of the poorest and most oppressed of the world. I often show my weakness by asking God when those riches are going to become actuality. Like Peter, I ask what am I to get out of all this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a prudent heart which waits patiently for the time of judgement. The time when the poor will be raised up is coming and those of this world will tremble. I trust in God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/author\/ghurrish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryknoll Lay Missioner Gabe Hurrish,<\/a><\/em><em>&nbsp;who joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/mklm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryknoll Lay Missioners<\/a> in 2017, serves as a teacher at St. Mary Magdalen School in Riwoto, Kapoeta, South Sudan.
