{"id":4429,"date":"2025-10-02T15:06:49","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T15:06:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=4429"},"modified":"2025-12-31T16:25:04","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T16:25:04","slug":"to-love-as-god-loves-us-a-maryknoll-reflection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/to-love-as-god-loves-us-a-maryknoll-reflection\/","title":{"rendered":"To Love as God Loves Us: A Maryknoll Reflection"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2022\/09\/gods-vision-for-us-a-maryknoll-reflection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leonor Montiel, M.M.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maryknollogc.org\/resources\/twenty-seventh-sunday-in-ordinary-time-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time<\/a><br>October 5, 2025<br><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/100525.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-4<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/100525.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Psalm 95:1-2, 6-7, 8-9<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/100525.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2 Timothy 1:6-8<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/100525.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">13-14; Luke 17:5-10<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first reading and the Gospel for the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time provide us a glimpse of the reality of the people at the time. The first reading mentions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/05\/wars-disasters-drive-record-global-internal-displacement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">violence, destruction<\/a>, discord, strife and misery. The Gospel describes a world of servants and masters in their proper places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a reality quite similar to the reality of our world today. It is not a world where we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/12\/chalice-and-paten-partners-in-mission-love-lives-on\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">love our neighbor as ourselves<\/a>, as Jesus commanded us, nor is it a world where everyone has life to the fullest, as he promised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first reading, the author lamented that God didn\u2019t heed their cry and intervene. In the Gospel, the apostles asked Jesus to increase their faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In both readings, the response from God and Jesus is not a magic wand that will make everything alright. Instead, God invited the people to participate in making a world anew. The people are invited to write the vision and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2023\/05\/true-faith-is-open-to-others-pope-repeats-in-hungary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have faith<\/a> as the vision will surely come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This invitation is true for us today. We are being invited by God to write the vision. How would we write the vision? Would our vision be in sync with the vision of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/09\/god-waited-for-me-joseph-everson-iii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">God for us<\/a>. What is God\u2019s vision for us, for our world? Simply, a world where everyone has life to the fullest, where we love one another as God has love us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus\u2019 narrative of the servant and the master in the Gospel sounds harsh, with the servant required to do only as commanded. However, if it is taken in the context of following Jesus\u2019 commandment to \u201clove one another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/03\/gods-awesome-love-a-maryknoll-lenten-reflection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as I have love you<\/a>\u201d and \u201clove your neighbor as yourself,\u201d then our world will be living profitably in love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The readings invite us to have faith, make God\u2019s vision our own and with God, live towards the realization of that vision, a world of love and life to the fullest for all creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Maryknoll Sister Maria Leonor Montiel, from the Philippines, served vulnerable communities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/03\/building-a-future-of-hope-in-cambodia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in Cambodia<\/a> for two decades, promoting human rights, healthcare access and community development.
