{"id":3909,"date":"2024-03-04T23:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-04T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=3909"},"modified":"2025-12-31T16:03:27","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T16:03:27","slug":"the-wisdom-of-plants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/the-wisdom-of-plants\/","title":{"rendered":"The Wisdom of Plants"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>WEB-ONLY:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listening is an important element of Pope Francis\u2019 call to care for our Common Home. How will we care without listening? How can we understand the needs of Mother Earth if we don\u2019t listen when it cries out? When the poor cry out? How will we change our habits if we don\u2019t learn what nature is trying to teach us?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Bolivia, one man\u2019s mission has been to prick up his ears and listen to plants, learning from them and bringing that knowledge to the rest of the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/afgj.org\/bolivia-tiahuanaco-headquarters-of-the-international-meeting-of-bearers-of-ancestral-knowledge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carlos Prado Mendoza<\/a> is a Quechua traditional practitioner renowned in Bolivia and abroad. More than 30 years ago, he, along with Maryknoll Brother Lawrence Kenning, began designing a garden with a diverse range of medicinal plants and trees in our property. That project continues to this day at the Maryknoll Botanical Garden in the city of Cochabamba, and was inaugurated under that name in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I got back in touch with Carlos a couple years ago, and we decided to journey together again in response to Pope Francis\u2019 invitation to sow the seeds of a \u201cgreen\u201d spirituality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carlos is director of the Kuska Cultural Center for Ancestral Wisdoms (<em>Kuska<\/em> means \u201ctogether\u201d in Quechua). The mission of the center is the dissemination and preservation of ancestral knowledge about traditional medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to preserve that human patrimony, with Carlos\u2019 help, and along with Maryknoll Seminarian Leonard Kabaka, we created a catalogue of all the medicinal plants in the garden at the Maryknoll center in Cochabamba. Carlos and Maryknoll Seminarian Barrack Odeka Auka built a greenhouse to grow new species and multiply native varieties for Cochabamba\u2019s botanical garden and a reforestation of the Bolivian Amazon project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also began an herbal pharmacy with the aim of helping the community, especially in preventing respiratory illnesses and post-COVID depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter the pandemic we have to ask, \u2018What are we doing to offer an alternative to the population?\u2019\u201d says Carlos. \u201cWhat we eat should be related to natural products and to the care of our environment. We have to prevent both environmental and mental pollution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that goal in mind, we arrange guided talks with the subject \u201cListening to the Wisdom of Plants.\u201d Carlos works with various groups, presenting different plants and teaching about their benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we are doing,\u201d Carlos explains, \u201cis recovering the knowledge of our ancestors for this modern society that\u2019s losing its spiritual values.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His ancestral wisdom, Carlos says, comes via oral tradition from his parents and grandparents and through his own academic studies and research. The World Health Organization estimates that about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/25-03-2022-who-establishes-the-global-centre-for-traditional-medicine-in-india\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">80% of the global population<\/a> makes use of traditional medicine. In 2022, the WHO opened the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/initiatives\/who-global-traditional-medicine-centre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Traditional Medicine Centre<\/a> in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From Carlos and the plants, we have learned that plants like to be surrounded by species different from their own, and that they need each other\u2019s company to be stronger. When they cohabit, plants draw nutrients from the earth at different depths, which they then share through an intertwined underground network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How would this world change if we listened to this wisdom and learned that coexistence with different people and all living things always enriches and strengthens us?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carlos explains that this ancestral cosmovision \u201cis in agreement, in relationship and in interaction with everything that exists in this world.\u201d Likewise, Pope Francis offers that we should transition from the utilitarian logic of exploiting the earth until it is depleted and discarded, to a logic of gratitude and reciprocity. \u201cWe all have ears,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/messages\/communications\/documents\/20220124-messaggio-comunicazioni-sociali.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says the pope<\/a>, \u201cbut many times even those with perfect hearing are unable to hear another person. In fact, there is an interior deafness worse than the physical one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through our inter-institutional alliance and with listening hearts, Carlos, I, and other missioner friends are learning to listen to the wisdom of plants to cultivate nature\u2019s values of gratitude and reciprocity within our population and communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><em>Featured Image: Carlos Prado Mendoza, a speaker, author and practitioner of traditional medicine, has expertise in horticulture.
