It was always my real-life adventure story with the heroes in black, white, and grey habits all around the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today the saga continues. And a new hero is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/?s=Father+Joseph+Veneroso\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Father Joseph Veneroso<\/a>. The Spring 2024 issue is a keeper with a prayer poem reflecting divine beauty \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/photo_meditations\/laudate-deum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cLaudate Deum\u201d<\/a> \u2014 and a Lenten meditation on the value of human suffering and disability embraced as mission, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/03\/spirit-of-mission-in-the-shadow-of-the-cross\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cIn the Shadow of the Cross.\u201d<\/a> Father is always pithy with just the right words that go straight to the heart, and the photography is perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Jan Hicks<\/em><br><em>Oak Ridge, Tennessee<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>MISSIONERS SAFE?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Some time ago, <em>Maryknoll<\/em> published an article about the new lay missioners who were being commissioned for their assignments around the world. Included in that list was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2023\/03\/mklm-class-sent-to-show-soul\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">married couple being sent to Haiti<\/a>. The article acknowledged that the situation in Haiti was precarious because of the political situation there and the general instability of the country. However, I recall that the article also expressed an expectation that the new lay missioners would be a sign of hope for that troubled land.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the situation in Haiti has only gotten worse, I wonder about that couple and how they are doing. Would it be possible for you to inform the readership about their current status? Are they still in Haiti? Are they safe?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I pray and hope for the wellbeing of all the Maryknoll members in Haiti, as I also do for all the people of that suffering country. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Frank Hector Galvan<\/em><br><em>Beaumont, California<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Editor\u2019s Note:<\/strong> According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/mklm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryknoll Lay Missioners<\/a> the missioner couple, <a href=\"https:\/\/mklm.org\/our-people\/missioners\/profile-mike-lattanzi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michael Lattanzi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mklm.org\/our-people\/missioners\/profile-susan-silveus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Susan Silveus<\/a>, had been visiting family and were <a href=\"https:\/\/mklm.org\/haiti\/a-farewell-to-haiti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">not able to return to Haiti<\/a> due to the escalation of violence. They are now in El Paso, Texas, where they have begun the process of reassignment. The other lay missioner, <a href=\"https:\/\/mklm.org\/our-people\/missioners\/profile-sami-scott\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sami Scott<\/a>, had to leave her mission site in Gros Morne when <a href=\"https:\/\/maryknollogc.org\/resources\/webinar\/haiti-crisis-conversation-maryknoll-lay-missioner-sami-scott\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">criminal gangs took over<\/a> even this remote rural area. Because Haiti\u2019s international airports were closed, it was necessary for her to travel by land to the Dominican Republic, from where she left for the States. Scott hopes to return to Haiti.\u00a0<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>HAMAS TERRORISTS<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>As a lifelong Roman Catholic, I appreciate the help that Maryknoll does for the poor. However, I was very disappointed in the Spring 2024 From the Editor letter. Israel is not in a conflict with Palestine. This false information has led to protests throughout the world. Israel is fighting the terrorist group Hamas after that group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2023\/10\/pope-calls-for-release-of-hostages-shows-concern-for-gaza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">attacked Israelis on Oct. 7, 2023<\/a>. When Israel defeats Hamas, then Palestine will be free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Diane Brawdy Miller<\/em><br><em>Copley, Ohio<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>BOLIVIA UPDATE<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Thank you for sharing in the Spring 2024 issue of <em>Maryknoll <\/em>what is now happening on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/03\/cultivating-mission-in-cochabamba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryknoll property in Cochabamba, Bolivia<\/a>. I was a student there in 1970 and we had a large group studying the three languages the school offered, mainly Spanish [and also Quechua and Aymara]. It was a great group.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now I am fascinated by the interesting projects taking place on that same land, but also thrilled that the center is <a href=\"https:\/\/climalanguagecenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">continuing to offer language classes<\/a>. It is a need and a great opportunity for missionaries to Latin America and other places. The latest Winter issue is extraordinary, with the beautiful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/photo_meditations\/light-in-the-darkest-hour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">poetry of Father Joseph Veneroso<\/a> and the introduction to the amazing dedicated life of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2023\/12\/a-rich-poverty-in-bangladesh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Father Robert McCahill<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The magazine introduces me to the people of countries I will never visit and also to their struggles in life. It was mentioned in the article that Father McCahill has written an annual letter since 1984 which the <em>National Catholic Reporter<\/em> publishes. It was so good to read about our forgotten Indigenous people of the United States. Last year, we had the opportunity to visit the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Montana. In the town of Browning, we went to Mass at Little Flower Church. How welcome we felt! The congregation sang a blessing song for all visitors. How touching!
