{"id":3611,"date":"2024-09-03T23:47:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-03T23:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=3611"},"modified":"2025-12-31T15:28:19","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T15:28:19","slug":"carrying-the-flag-of-mission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/carrying-the-flag-of-mission\/","title":{"rendered":"Carrying the Flag of Mission"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A stirring call to worship in Swahili, ululations and Kenyan drums brought the spirit of Africa to the Maryknoll campus in Ossining, New York, for the ordination of the two newest Maryknoll priests, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/03\/hearts-on-fire-seminarians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joshua Maondo and Charles Ogony<\/a>, from Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maryknoll missioners and attendees of different countries, languages and cultures packed Our Lady Queen of Apostles Chapel, including three Kenyan choirs from Minnesota, New Jersey and Seattle, as well as Hispanic parishioners from Chicago who drove 12 hours for the special occasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Mass held on June 8, <a href=\"https:\/\/archny.org\/about\/our-bishops\/bishop-peter-byrne\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Auxiliary Bishop Peter Byrne of the Archdiocese of New York<\/a> evoked the innovative missionary spirit of early Maryknoller Bishop Francis Xavier Ford. \u201cHis episcopal model was <em>condolere<\/em>; to have compassion,\u201d Bishop Byrne said. \u201cFirst, we have to love people if we want to teach them and have them respond.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As both men lay prostrate on the floor during the Litany of Supplication, <a href=\"https:\/\/nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.maryknollmagazine.org%2F2024%2F03%2Fcharles-ogony-prayer-for-vocations-spring-2024%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7CAMoreno-Diaz%40Maryknoll.org%7Cbeb83fa6bb124b57132208dcab5856a3%7Cef1a5d44d2e64df18c73db3c27128ee9%7C0%7C0%7C638573643105575603%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=XuwkOXa8KDVN80XYKzHUYu4ymksgCDxUQNmhW8Q2qoQ%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Father Ogony<\/a> says he dedicated the moment to the Blessed Mother, \u201cso that my priesthood may be guided by her and I may remain part of the light that shines to guide God\u2019s people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll these friends of ours from all over the United States, some of them came with their entire families just for this event,\u201d Father Maondo said. \u201cI felt that each of them had a unique sense of the spirit of God.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"384\" src=\"http:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/10-17-Ordination-Joshua-Charles-1-updated-768x384-1.jpg\" alt=\"Nicholas Maondo, who flew from Kenya to attend his son\u2019s ordination, looks on proudly as Joshua is ordained. \" class=\"wp-image-3615\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/10-17-Ordination-Joshua-Charles-1-updated-768x384-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/10-17-Ordination-Joshua-Charles-1-updated-768x384-1-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Nicholas Maondo, who flew from Kenya to attend his son\u2019s ordination, looks on proudly as Joshua is ordained. (Octavio Dura\u0301n\/U.S.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Father Maondo\u2019s father, Nicholas, beamed with pride during the ceremony. The older Maondo was able to travel from Kenya. His wife, however, was denied a visa to the United States. \u201cWe have been accompanying and supporting Joshua for a long time,\u201d the senior Maondo said. \u201cIt\u2019s been a long journey, but he did it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Father Maondo\u2019s aunt, Sister Terry Makokha of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssjmombasa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sisters of St. Joseph of Mombasa,<\/a> who is studying and serving in Pennsylvania, said she was happy that her young nephew is following \u201cthis special calling.\u201d She conveyed her wishes: \u201cI pray that he may continue answering God\u2019s call.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, Father Ogony\u2019s parents were denied U.S. visas to attend the ordination. To represent his family, the ordinand chose Alfredo and Ver\u00f3nica Vega, a parishioner couple from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motheroftheamericas.org\/?locale=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mother of the Americas Church<\/a> in Chicago where he volunteered during his formation. He\u2019s almost like family,\u201d Ver\u00f3nica said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCharles, besides being humble, has a great calm that\u2019s contagious,\u201d said Alfredo. \u201cHe tells us not to hurry in life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The newly ordained Fathers Maondo and Ogony received the sign of peace from about 40 fellow priests to the song of <em>Ndiwe Kuhani Hata Milele<\/em> (\u201cYou Are a Priest Forever\u201d). Afterward, the young priests distributed Communion, with Nicholas Maondo first in line to receive the host from his son Joshua.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mass concluded joyfully, as a procession of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/p\/Catholic-Women-Association-Kenya-100074987210746\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Catholic Women Association from Kenya<\/a> came singing and dancing down the aisle. The young priests, along with the rest of the congregation, joined in the celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the Mass, attendees lined up to receive the traditional first blessings from the newly ordained priests. The emotive custom took place in front of the statue of Our Lady of Maryknoll on the quadrangle of the Maryknoll Society Center. (Octavio Dura\u0301n\/U.S.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WYkYSxpi27E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This is a new era of mission<\/a>,\u201d declared Maryknoll Father Russell Feldmeier during the post-ordination sending ceremony, \u201cwhere there is no \u2018out there,\u2019 but it is all in here, in this Church.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ordination of the new priests represents \u201ca new intercultural reality within Maryknoll itself,\u201d continued Father Feldmeier, where \u201cwe are called to expand our circles of care and compassion to go beyond boundaries of trial, language, race, gender and culture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The young priests, he said, bring their gifts, the blessings of their African heritage and <a href=\"https:\/\/maryknollsociety.org\/the-maryknoll-formation-house-in-nairobi-kenya-by-seminarians-charles-ogony-joshua-mutende\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">their Maryknoll formation<\/a> to their first assignment to Bolivia, where the Maryknoll Society began missionary work in 1942, and where Maondo and Ogony completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2020\/07\/going-where-you-are-needed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">their overseas training in 2020.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"672\" src=\"http:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/10-17-Ordination-Joshua-Charles-2-768x672-1.jpg\" alt=\"Father Maondo extends his hand for the invocation of the Holy Spirit during the consecration. \" class=\"wp-image-3618\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/10-17-Ordination-Joshua-Charles-2-768x672-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/10-17-Ordination-Joshua-Charles-2-768x672-1-300x263.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Father Maondo extends his hand for the invocation of the Holy Spirit during the consecration. (Octavio Dura\u0301n\/U.S.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCharles,\u201d said Father Feldmeier as he addressed the new priests, \u201cyou have such a deep love for the elderly and the poor and for those on the margins, and you seek to be authentic to the needs of others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To Joshua, he said, \u201cYou bring great enthusiasm and radiate so much energy and seek to use that energy for those that need help, especially families. And you have great talent in music.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2023\/06\/educating-heroes-in-kenya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryknoll Superior General Lance Nadeau<\/a> presented the new priests with their mission crucifixes \u201cto proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ by your words and example.\u201d Both said that Father Lance, a mentor for them since they were university students, not only influenced their decision to join Maryknoll but also modeled for them the style of priesthood they want to pursue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe preached unity,\u201d said Father Ogony. \u201cHe brought real life issues and connected them to the Gospel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Father Maondo said, \u201cI\u2019ve seen Father Nadeau do things I\u2019ve never seen any other person do. I have seen him wash student toilets. I have seen him polish the church floor. (Octavio Dura\u0301n\/U.S.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the sending ceremony, Father Michael Briggs, superior of Maryknoll\u2019s Latin America region, welcomed both men back to Bolivia. \u201cYou have listened to people, let their lives touch your lives, you\u2019ve learned to dance with the people, celebrate with the people,\u201d he said. \u201cYou are going to join us and give service to God in Latin America.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Father Ogony, who served in ministries with the elderly and homeless of Cochabamba, Bolivia, is excited about his return. \u201cI feel like I\u2019m going back home,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Silvana Mart\u00ednez, a Bolivian who met Fathers Maondo and Ogony during their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2021\/09\/responding-to-gods-call\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Overseas Training Program in her country<\/a>, said she is confident that both priests will \u201copen new missions and encounter new challenges in order to bring the Maryknoll charism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the same spirit of mission that Maryknoll has brought to the world since its inception, some years ago the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers began accepting overseas vocations from mission regions. (Octavio Dura\u0301n\/U.S.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2022\/09\/ordination-of-maryknoll-father-john-siyumbu-from-kenya-to-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Father John Siyumbu<\/a>, the first Maryknoll priest from overseas vocations and who was ordained in 2022, traveled from his mission in Tanzania for the ordination. Fathers Maondo and Ogony will \u201chave the&nbsp; opportunity to fly the Maryknoll flag of mission, to fly the flag of compassion,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJoshua is a priest who can make things happen. We need a priest like that,\u201d Father Siyumbu said. \u201cCharles is going to be a listening priest and offer God\u2019s grace to other people. The three of us, and many other young men who are coming from Africa, would like to participate in the mission that we have seen. (Octavio Dura\u0301n\/U.S.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Reflecting on their upcoming departure for mission, Father Maondo said that the duty of missioners is to plant \u201cseedlings of faith, seedlings of hope and virtue everywhere\u201d in those places where \u201cpeople are wondering whether Christ is with them or not.\u201d The world needs healing, he added. \u201cI think <a href=\"https:\/\/maryknollsociety.org\/vocations\/fathers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">that\u2019s what mission is all about<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe world is hungering for love,\u201d Father Ogony said, evoking the words of Mother Teresa. \u201cIt just needs that drop of love.
