{"id":3425,"date":"2025-03-03T23:10:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-03T23:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/?p=3425"},"modified":"2025-12-31T14:05:04","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T14:05:04","slug":"sharing-jesus-heart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/sharing-jesus-heart\/","title":{"rendered":"Sharing Jesus\u2019 Heart"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Compassion compelled Jesus to act, and the same is true for missioners, said Father Juan Z\u00fa\u00f1iga, secretary general of the Maryknoll Society, who presided over the Covenant and Sending Mass for the latest Maryknoll lay missioners to answer the call to serve abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mklm.org\/our-people\/missioners\/profile-josh-sisolak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joshua Sisolak<\/a> and Marjorie Humphrey were sent forth to Bolivia and East Africa respectively on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024, at the Annunciation Chapel of the Maryknoll Sisters Center in Ossining, New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou are called to share the very movement of Jesus\u2019 heart. A heart that sees, is moved, and responds,\u201d Father Z\u00fa\u00f1iga said to the two missioners. It is \u201ca mission that meets people where they are, that seeks to heal and restore, and that proclaims the Reign of God.\u201d Noting <a href=\"https:\/\/mklm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryknoll Lay Missioners<\/a>\u2019 five decades of service, he added, \u201cMarj and Josh, as you follow in these footsteps, you are part of this legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Sisolak, a recent graduate of the University of Notre Dame, is a new missioner, he knows Maryknoll well. (Andrea Moreno-D\u00edaz\/U.S.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI grew up hearing about my dad\u2019s experiences and the impact that it had on his life and forming the character and faith he has today,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Executive Director Elvira Ramirez says, \u201cIt\u2019s very special for all of us at Maryknoll Lay Missioners to see a father pass the torch of mission to his son, especially as our organization is approaching our <a href=\"https:\/\/mklm.org\/maryknoll-lay-missioners-50th-anniversary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">50th anniversary<\/a> next year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sisolak comes from Ashland, Montana. Most of his classmates were from the Crow and Northern Cheyenne tribes, and he witnessed different traditions and rituals. \u201cThis experience gave me a glimpse into the lives of those who experience hardship and oppression,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While studying in college, Sisolak worked as a videographer and video editor and participated in volunteer service opportunities. After graduating with a degree in film, television and theater and a minor in theology, he returned to his hometown to work at St. Labre Indian School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI began my discernment of becoming a missioner two years ago while I was still an undergraduate,\u201d he says. \u201cKnowing Maryknoll well meant that I didn\u2019t have to search for very long.\u201d He finds in the lay missioners\u2019 organization \u201ca radical way of living out the Catholic faith in today\u2019s world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sisolak\u2019s orientation took him to El Paso, Texas, where the mission services department of Maryknoll Lay Missioners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/03\/dream-on-lay-missioners-sent-to-serve\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">relocated last year<\/a>, and to Washington, D.C., where he participated in a collaborative lay formation program of Franciscan Mission Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe wholeheartedly welcome Josh at a time when we celebrate the nearly 1,000 lay missioners who have been sent through Maryknoll Lay Missioners,\u201d Ramirez says. \u201cMuch has been accomplished, but there is still much to be done!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Humphrey was already one of those lay missioners, having served in Kenya and southern Sudan from 1987 to 2007. After nearly another two decades back in the States, Humphrey is <a href=\"https:\/\/mklm.org\/missioners\/marj-humphrey-return-to-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">returning to mission<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe greatest joy of my life was being on the ground in East Africa. I took a trip there on my own last year just to kind of see. \u2026 At my age, am I still able to do this? And I found that I can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve learned so much from East Africans,\u201d she adds. \u201cTheir joy in the face of adversity and the importance they place on relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born and raised in Idaho, the missioner earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in communications and religious studies and a master\u2019s degree in education from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. She later studied to become a physician assistant at St. Vincent Catholic Medical Center in Staten Island, New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Humphrey\u2019s vocation as a missioner emerged during her years at a Catholic Worker house of hospitality in New York City. She grew close to the movement\u2019s cofounder Dorothy Day and served as an editor for the <em>Catholic Worker<\/em> newspaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Humphrey was also deeply influenced during this formative period by three Maryknoll sisters living in a tenement in the neighborhood. <a href=\"https:\/\/maryknollmissionarchives.org\/deceased-sisters\/sister-mary-mercy-hirschboeck-mm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sister Mary Mercy Hirschboeck<\/a>, the congregation\u2019s first doctor, became a role model for her and, in 1987, Humphrey joined Maryknoll Lay Missioners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Humphrey found her place in East Africa\u2019s rural clinics. (Andrea Moreno-D\u00edaz\/U.S.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of her most impactful work took place at the Kitale AIDS Program in Western Kenya, which she joined in 2000 at the height of the HIV\/AIDS epidemic. She faced skepticism about introducing antiretroviral therapy, which had become standard treatment in the developed world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet Humphrey was undeterred. Inspired by the pioneering <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Farmer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Doctor Paul Farmer<\/a>, who provided her with advice, she and her team ran a successful HIV\/AIDS clinic. \u201cWe saw hundreds of people who had \u2018one foot in the grave\u2019 return to healthy, productive lives,\u201d she recalls. \u201cChildren who were HIV-positive gained weight and recovered their energy so rapidly that we were astounded and overjoyed to see them resume a more normal childhood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Returning to the United States in 2007 to care for her elderly parents, Humphrey never lost her ties to mission. She joined Maryknoll Lay Missioners\u2019 board of directors and eventually became director of missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, she yearns to reconnect with the communities that shaped her \u2014 and to join the ranks of Maryknoll lay missioners in justice and peace ministries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMedicine is one kind of compassion and care. Another is listening to people and being present to them,\u201d Humphrey says. There\u2019s an epidemic of not listening, she explains, adding that people who are truly heard can develop the capacity to listen, thus breaking cycles that lead to violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Humphrey will begin her mission assignment with a short-term project in restorative justice in Uganda. From there, she will go on to Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRestorative justice has been shown to be an effective method of people coming to understand each other and stop hating each other,\u201d she says, \u201cand then to start healing and moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Sisolak and Humphrey pledged to serve in mission, Father Z\u00fa\u00f1iga reminded them, \u201cYou do not go alone. You go with the wisdom of so many that have come before you, and with the abiding presence of Jesus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ramirez echoed his sentiment: \u201cWe walk with Josh and Marj in body and in spirit as they go forth to love and serve in their respective journeys to Bolivia and East Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><em>Featured Image: Maryknoll Lay Missioners Joshua Sisolak and Marjorie Humphrey are called to serve in Bolivia and East Africa during their sending ceremony.
