Matthew Sim, from Singapore, and Patrick Okok, from Kenya, were ordained on June 7 at Our Lady Queen of Apostles Chapel in Ossining, New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his homily, ordaining prelate<a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/?s=mark+j+seitz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Bishop Mark J. Seitz<\/a> of El Paso, Texas, remembered the late <a href=\"https:\/\/maryknollmissionarchives.org\/deceased-fathers-bro\/father-john-e-bergwall-mm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryknoll Father John E. Bergwall<\/a>, whom he met as a child and who became an inspiration for him to seek the priesthood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Father Bergwall \u2014 a medical doctor before entering Maryknoll \u2014 could have had a career in medicine, Bishop Seitz said. Yet he felt called to do more: \u201cto make God known, to make God present in a way that only a priest could.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While they may accomplish \u201cmany wonderful things, there is nothing more important than to celebrate the sacraments and the Mass,\u201d Bishop Seitz said to the ordinands. \u201cFrom there, you and the Church that you serve will find the strength and the vision that it needs in order to serve the people of God.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"http:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/F25-Ordination-1-1.webp\" alt=\"Bishop Mark J. (Octavio Dur\u00e1n\/U.S.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The message resonated deeply with Father Sim. \u201cThrough the constant nourishment of ourselves and our communities in the Eucharist, we encourage ourselves to become more and more like Christ,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Father Sim, 45, the highlight of the ordination rite was when Bishop Seitz asked if the ordinands were worthy: \u201cTo hear my rector proclaim that, through the inquiry of the parishes, the communities that we have served, our fellow brothers and sisters and other Maryknoll missioners who have crossed our lives, we are worthy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the laying on of hands, Father Okok, 34, felt deeply moved. \u201cI got very emotional,\u201d he said. \u201cIt meant a lot for brother priests to welcome me to the brotherhood of priesthood and what that means to continue God\u2019s work of salvation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"http:\/\/dev.maryknollsociety.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/F25-Ordination-2.webp\" alt=\"Ordinands Matthew Sim and Patrick Okok lie prostrate for the Litany of Supplication. (Octavio Dur\u00e1n\/U.S.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To represent his parents, Father Okok chose Florence and Jospeter Mugambi, a Kenyan married couple whom he had met through their Small Christian Community in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/06\/serving-a-joyful-community-in-chicago\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chicago<\/a> while he was a seminarian there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen his parents were not able to get visas, Patrick asked me and my husband to step in,\u201d Florence said. The couple then spoke by phone to Okok\u2019s parents about their son\u2019s ordination ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey expressed that this is a fulfillment of a desire in the family,\u201d Jospeter said. \u201cOne of Patrick\u2019s uncles wished to become a priest, but he died early. (Octavio Dur\u00e1n\/U.S.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During the conclusion of the Mass, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2025\/06\/statement-from-the-maryknoll-superior-general\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryknoll Superior General Father Lance Nadeau<\/a> addressed the guests in attendance as well as those watching via livestream in Kenya, Tanzania, Taiwan and Bolivia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking in Swahili, the superior general sent a message to viewers in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2023\/06\/educating-heroes-in-kenya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kenya<\/a>, especially Father Okok\u2019s parents. \u201cYour contribution is immense,\u201d he said. \u201cFor raising these children to walk in God\u2019s way, spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ to the world, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bishop Seitz concluded the Mass of Holy Orders with a rousing message: \u201cTomorrow is Pentecost. (Courtesy of Matthew Sim\/U.S.)<\/span><div class=\"eb-slider-button-wrapper\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The joyful celebrations of the ordination weekend were the culmination of years of formation \u2014 most spent in mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Martin Ng, a longtime friend of Father Sim, says that as a teacher in Singapore, Sim already possessed the qualities of service that would define his calling. \u201cI believe it was God guiding him along the way,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s been an amazing journey that I have witnessed from the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Victor Mutobera, a Maryknoll seminarian, recalled Father Okok\u2019s leadership at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ku.ac.ke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kenyatta University<\/a>, where they both studied. \u201cHe was very active and in charge. We appointed him to oversee liturgy in the parish. There he witnessed the budding missioners blossom into priests in formation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brother Thibert said that Father Sim \u201chas a genuine love for the people. I say to Matthew, \u2018God will work wonders in your life.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As seminarians, the two missioners also served in the States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Endita Kiarie, founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/kenyanwomenssupportgroup.com\/programs\/kenya-women-support-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kenyan Women Support Group<\/a> in Chicago, recalled Father Okok\u2019s ministry there. \u201cPatrick would console families and share a good word,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ll never forget the time a lady was expecting a baby. Patrick showed up to support her with baby clothes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gilberto Salazar, a parishioner from Cristo Rey Church in El Paso, Texas, remembers fondly the time Sim spent at the parish. \u201cHe inspired my son Emilio. Seeing Matthew work at Cristo Rey showed my son that he can serve even in his teen years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the rainy weather, the atmosphere remained festive as the new priests gave their first blessings in the Our Lady of Maryknoll quadrangle. Then, joined by Maryknoll sisters and members of the Catholic Women Association from Kenya, they led a singing procession back to the chapel for their mission sending ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2024\/12\/an-oasis-in-the-borderlands-father-raymond-finch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryknoll Father Raymond Finch<\/a> reminded the new priests during the sending that mission is about going \u201cbeyond ourselves and our borders, beyond our own interests and needs.\u201d He added, \u201cIt\u2019s at the heart of what it means to follow Christ. It\u2019s the lifeblood of what it means to be Church.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bishop Seitz presented the priests with their mission crosses, and Father Nadeau announced that Fathers Sim and Okok will be sent to Taiwan in mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The superior of the Asia region, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryknollmagazine.org\/2023\/09\/serving-migrant-martyrs-in-taiwan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maryknoll Father Joyalito Tajonera<\/a>, welcomed the two priests. (Adam Mitchell\/U.S.)<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For Father Tajonera, the ordination held \u201ca real Pentecost message,\u201d he said, adding that Taiwan offers many mission possibilities. \u201cPatrick wants to work in youth ministry and the environment, while Matthew likes to work in migrant and parish ministry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Father Sim said this assignment to Asia is significant for more than geographical reasons. \u201cI will have to study the Taiwanese language, which is similar to Hokkien, the language that my father speaks. It\u2019s a grace for me to be able to communicate in my father\u2019s language with the people I serve, heart to heart,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn this wounded world, we have to start in the Church,\u201d Father Sim said, \u201cand together become a Eucharistic witness to the world of God\u2019s love and invite all into this space of love.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Father Okok said he prays to serve faithfully in his assignment to Asia. \u201cI pray to God to give me the grace to be a priest who listens and has a vision \u2014 a people\u2019s vision. I pray that wherever I\u2019m sent, God helps me identify how I am to be one of the people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIrrespective of the social context, we are called to meet people in their faith,\u201d Father Okok said. \u201cThat can be in a refugee camp, in a slum, in the richest part of the country. It can be in warring countries.
