Raising two daughters with her husband on the outskirts of San Salvador, Clelia Estrada de Cruz instilled in them her own parents\u2019 values. \u201cThey taught us to be generous with others, and to share,\u201d Clelia says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The family belongs to Cristo Salvador, a resilient parish in the Zacamil neighborhood of Mejicanos, El Salvador, where Maryknoll Father John Spain<\/a> serves. Maryknoll has a long history in this marginalized community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe parish promotes mission, and the integration of its different ministries,\u201d Clelia says. \u201cWe are in an urban zone with a lot of difficult situations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clelia, 67, has worked for the Archdiocese of San Salvador in its Episcopal Vicariate for Human Development since 1991. She has served in disaster relief, HIV\/AIDS ministry and health care, and teaching integral ecology based on the encyclical Laudato Si\u2019<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, she works with children up to 7 years old and their families. In this country wracked by decades of bloodshed, her program breaks cycles of violence starting in the home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe cultural belief is that the belt and yelling are the ways to discipline children,\u201d she says. \u201cWe try to replace this with a discipline of love and tenderness. We teach different methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWorking with the Catholic Church has been a blessing,\u201d adds Clelia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her daughter Carolina Guadalupe, an architect, works in marginal areas. Her other daughter, Sof\u00eda Beatriz Cruz Estrada, 34, follows in her mother\u2019s footsteps by working closely with the Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After receiving the sacraments of Communion and confirmation, Sof\u00eda helped with catechism classes, often walking the dangerous streets to the parish alone. \u201cI just knew I had to go,\u201d she recalls. At about 20, she joined the youth ministry, where she soon was given a leadership role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Approximately a year later, the pastor, Father Joaqu\u00edn \u00c1lvarez, asked Sof\u00eda to represent the parish at vicariate meetings. The vicariate, in turn, sent her to meetings at the archdiocesan level. Sof\u00eda then represented the Archdiocese of San Salvador, serving on the national Bishops\u2019 Youth Commission. She joined the World Youth Day pilgrimages<\/a> to Poland and Panama and attended a special young adults gathering in Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2019, Sof\u00eda received an extraordinary invitation. The Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life<\/a> was establishing its first International Youth Advisory Body. Sof\u00eda was among the 20 young people around the world selected for this new advisory committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During her four years on the committee, Sof\u00eda and other members reflected on relevant issues together. Each year for Pope Francis\u2019 celebration of young people on the Solemnity of Christ the King, they responded to his choice of Scripture verse, and the Holy Father considered their input for his message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For World Youth Day in Portugal<\/a> two years ago, the committee was \u201cblessed to give ideas to create the Stations of the Cross,\u201d Sof\u00eda says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She says she is amazed \u2014 and humbled \u2014 by her own trajectory. \u201cGod has put me here,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sof\u00eda had earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in marketing, but began to pursue social work. \u201cI like working with people,\u201d she says. As part of a master\u2019s degree in project management, she did an internship at Caritas<\/a>, where she later worked in a joint project with Catholic Relief Services.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her work brought her into the same circles as Clelia, her mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe shared the same work, in different ways,\u201d Sof\u00eda says. Their active participation in the parish, too, serves to \u201cstrengthen the bond between mother and daughter.\u201d She says she \u201cnever feels alone in mission.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sof\u00eda credits Maryknoll Fathers Spain and John \u201cJack\u201d Northrop<\/a> for supporting her ministry and for transmitting joy and enthusiasm. For young people, it can be difficult to express themselves, she notes. \u201cTheir openness has been a great help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the COVID-19 pandemic, Father Joaqu\u00edn called on Sof\u00eda to restart the parish\u2019s youth ministry and \u201creanimate the youth.\u201d Once again, she makes her way along the well-worn path to Cristo Salvador.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After all, she says, \u201cWe have come to serve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
